Roscommon are into the 2021 All-Ireland U20 football championship final after a late rally was enough to see off Down this evening.
It finished 2-13 to 1-10 at Kingspan Breffni, where the Connacht champions hit an unanswered 1-5 in the closing stages to book their place in Sunday week’s decider against Offaly at Croke Park (throw-in 1pm).
James Fitzpatrick’s goal had given the Rossies a 1-0 to 0-2 lead after 10 minutes in the damp conditions in Cavan Town and they held a two-point lead on the half-hour mark prior to Down captain Shealan Johnston hitting their net in injury-time.
It left the score-line at 1-7 to 1-5 in the Mourne lads' favour at the break and the Ulster champions maintained their lead up until the 56th minute when Roscommon wing-back Patrick Gavin steamed forward to make it 1-10 apiece.
The Rossies rode their momentum as Adam McDermott put their noses in front a minute later and sub Charlie Carthy doubled their lead in injury-time.
Johnston saw red to add to Down’s woes and the deal was sealed for Roscommon when McDermott rolled home a breakaway goal into the Down net in the sixth minute of injury-time.
