'Name Those Pitches' An Riocht invites suggestions for the individual naming of the three pitches at Pairc Na Riochta Dunavil currently referred to as the main field, the new field and the wee field. The pitches will be officially named at the start of September to coincide with the official opening of the Conal Baldwin Memorial Wall Ball. Previous suggestions should be resubmitted, leave your written suggestion and reason for suggesting it in the office or the postbox at Dunavil or email
[email protected] All suggestions should be in by 31st July 2013, that's Wednesday week There has been a good response with some interesting suggestions so far, so make sure to get your nomination in now, don't leave it to the last moment and miss out.
A group of parents, coaches and administrators has been meeting regularly over the past month with the intention of improving on our juvenile structures to maximise benefit to the children, the schools and the club; if you have any views on this important subject contact Thomas Sloan, Seamus Curran, the Club or come along to the next meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 31 July.
An Riocht invites suggestions as to the better use of two unused areas of our grounds at Dunavil adjacent to the new pitch. One area measures approx 23m x 17m and the other is triangular measuring approx 73m x 71m x 80m. Thanks to those who attended the open meeting or who have made suggestions, if you have any ideas contact the Club asap
The next edition of 'Sideline View', the An Riocht/Kingdom newsletter will be published in August. If you have any suggestions for articles or information for inclusion it is up to you to let us know.
Plans are at an advanced stage for a big weekend of activities from Friday 6th to Sunday 8th September.
On the Friday Kilkeel Golf Club will host the Kingdom Golf Classic from 12pm to 4pm. Later that day there will be a cheque presentation to 'Chest, Heart & Stroke' and the Conal Baldwin Memorial Ball Wall facility will be officially opened; also the naming of the three club pitches will be revealed. All those who supported in any way the 'Climb 4 Conal' are invited to be present and the Golf prize giving will take place at the club that evening.
As part of the 'Join In' project, a charitable trust set up and designed to help recruit new members and volunteers for local sports clubs, we are encouraged to put on events and activities between 27th July and 9th September, so on the Saturday morning we will host an event still to be decided (so thinking caps on please) while on Saturday afternoon the JG Donnan Memorial Social Sevens take place at Dunavil with An Riocht and Tir Na nOg back to defend the Cup and Shield respectively. There will also be Social Camogie and Hurling games taking place and entertainment after in the Club.
Social Gaelic Games is a relatively new activity aimed at those club members who don't feature for club senior or reserve teams in competitive leagues. More than likely this group consists of over 35s but basically anyone who wants to play for a bit of fun and enjoyment and wants to keep fit can participate. The term 'past player' can cover a huge spectrum from those players who fell away after U16 to those who played competitively into their forties. The feedback from the players taking part is that they like the opportunity to meet up with past team mates and opponents in this environment on a frequent basis.
If you have any suggestions for activities over that weekend please contact the Club.
Reports
The Senior Camogie match An Riocht v Portaferry did not take place.
The U16 Camogs lost in the Championship in Clonduff
The U12 Camogie game Atticall v An Riocht did not take place.
The County Board U8 & U10 Camogie Blitz at Dunavil on Sunday attracted a bumper turn out.
The Reserve Footballers lost a high scoring game in Mayobridge by 3-9 (18) to 2-20 (26). An Riocht got off to a flyer and 1-2 from John Clarke helped us go seven nil clear within twelve minutes of the throw-in but once the home team settled they rattled over six points. With play now swinging end to end Conor Cole should have goaled to extend the lead but the Bridge keeper was down smartly to beat the ball away and in a sweeping move they shot the equaliser in the twenty fifth minute. It got worse for An Riocht for almost immediately Mayobridge crashed in their first goal and for a minute the comeback looked complete. Then Niall McGovern chipped the keeper and An Riocht were back on terms though in added time two frees gave the Bridge a narrow interval advantage.
Though points were exchanged at either end on the restart the Bridge fired home a second goal and went on a run of scores while An Riocht had only two Chris Killen frees in reply.
Eight points down, Conor Cole gave An Riocht a lifeline with a cracking third goal but they were unable to push on and the Bridge replied with three quick fire points leaving Stephen Corr's late strike a mere consolation.
Team S Doran, M Clarke, P Allen, S McVeigh, J McCartan, D O'Reilly, R Spiers, D White 0-1, P Murney, N McGovern 1-0, C Killen 0-4, C Cole 1-0, A McVeigh, J Clarke 1-3, S Corr 0-1. Subs S Sloan, N McArdle.
The U16 Footballers won Division Two with a victory in Kilcoo. Their next match is the Championship on Thursday 29th August.
