Former Clare and Dublin hurling manager Anthony Daly believes Cork’s Mark Coleman was “very lucky” not to receive his marching orders against Galway on Saturday night.
The incident between Coleman and Galway midfielder Cathal Mannion, which resulted in the Rebels defender being cautioned, was a talking point on last night’s Sunday Game programme.
Former Clare All-Ireland winner Daly gave his thoughts on the flashpoint which saw Coleman catching Mannion with a loose swing of his hurley as his opponents gave a handpass.
“Mark Coleman is very, very lucky here,” he said. “I haven’t seen Mark Coleman ever do something like this before and it’s not in his locker in my opinion. Now I think it’s players possibly trying to prove something to themselves, but this is wild here, that is dangerous.
“Cathal Mannion is handpassing the ball away. That is a loose, stray hurley on the side of a guy’s ear sticking out of his helmet and he’s a lucky boy not to see red.
“He’s been dealt with now because he got a yellow, but there’s no place for that.”
He added: “I played for Ger Loughnane for long enough to know you had to play on the edge. But the last thing you’d be told going out was no wildness. That’s wild. That’s dangerous play.”
