Donegal recorded a hugely emphatic 2-23 to 0-5 win over Clare in Castlebar this afternoon to advance into the quarter-finals of the All-Ireland senior football championship.

Ryan McHugh’s goal six minutes in set the tone for the Ulster champions as they raced towards an unassailable 1-11 to 0-1 lead by half-time.

It took four minutes of the restart for Oisin Gallen to hammer in a second goal for Jim McGuinness men who would record a 24-point win in the end and show their Banner counterparts the exit door.

Meanwhile, both Tyrone and Cork are through to the preliminary quarter-finals, with the Red Hands taking second place in Group 3 following their 1-18 to 0-17 win over the Rebels in Tullamore.

Looking to back up their win over Donegal last time out, Cork made a decent start at O’Connor Park with Chris Og Jones and Steven Sherlock in good shooting form and it was the latter’s point that had them up by 0-10 to 0-9 at the break.

Points from Darragh Canavan and Darren McCurry levelled it twice for Tyrone after the restart, but it was Ben Cullen’s goal on 47 minutes that saw them taking control of the contest.

McCurry, Canavan and Niall Morgan (‘45’) extended the 2021 champions’ lead to six after that as they ensured their berth in the knock-out stages.
