There was a dramatic end to the only Sigerson Cup Round 2 tie to survive the weather last night when TU Dublin defeated last year's finalists UL 3-1 on penalties after extra-time couldn't separate the sides.

Played in freezing conditions at UL, the game finished level 3-11 to 1-17 after extra-time before Sean Guiden, Shane Cunnane and Killian McGinnis all converted penalties to send the visitors through to the quarter-finals. The defeat wasn't fatal for UL who will have another chance in the backdoor series.

Darragh Cashman (UL) and Kevin Callaghan (TU Dublin) traded first half goals as the hosts took a commanding 1-9 to 1-3 lead into the break. However, TU Dublin scored an unanswered 2-5 after the restart - McGinnis and Callaghan with the goals - to take a 3-8 to 1-10 lead. But UL rallied with four late points, including two in injury-time from Paul Keaney and Ciaran Downes, to force extra-time.

The sides scored three points apiece in the additional period, meaning penalties were required to decide the outcome.

Weather-permitting, three more Round 2 games will take place tonight - UU v ATU Donegal, ATU Galway v UCC and SETU Carlow v MTU Kerry.
