Longford and Offaly will honour the memory of Eugene McGee when they meet in a SF challenge next Sunday, April 10 at 3pm.

The memorial match will take place in Fr Mc Gee Park, the home of Colmcille GFC which was Eugene’s beloved club. The former Offaly All-Ireland winning manager’s death in May 2019 was widely mourned in the GAA. While he also managed UCD, Cavan and the Ireland International Rules team, Eugene is best remembered for Offaly’s famous All-Ireland final victory over five-in-a-row chasing Kerry in 1982.

“Eugene McGee Memorial Day is set to be an exciting day out for everyone as we remember a man who hailed from Colmcille GAA and had one of the most successful careers in GAA history in the county of Offaly. Bringing together the two places he held so dear to remember Eugene for his love of Gaelic football,” Colmcille GAA said.

Admission is €10 per adult (children are free) to the game which will be followed by a special guest appearance by GAA president Larry McCarthy and members of Offaly’s 1982 All-Ireland winning team. A presentation by the McGee family will also take place.

“This is bound to be a momentous day for our club,” the North Longford club added.

The game will act as preparation for both counties’ upcoming Leinster SFC campaign. Offaly are away to Wexford in the first round on Sunday, April 24, while Longford face neighbours Westmeath in a local derby quarter-final six days later in TEG Cusack Park.
