Shane Ronayne has stepped down as Waterford football manager midway through his two-year term amid speculation he is poised to take over as Cork ladies football boss.

He was in charge of the Deise for just four competitive matches - winning one against neighbours Wexford in Division 4 of the Allianz League, while a 4-18 to 0-12 Munster SFC loss to Limerick would, ultimately, end his shortlived reign.

"Shane Ronayne has tonight informed the Waterford County Board that he has decided  to step down as Waterford Senior Football Manager," Waterford GAA confirmed the news in a statement last night.

"Waterford GAA would like to sincerely thank Shane and his management team for  their work and commitment to the Waterford Senior Football team over the past twelve  months and wish them every success in their future endeavours.

"A process will now be put in place for the appointment of a new Senior Football Team Manager."

The highly-regarded coach from Mitchelstown had steered Cork senior club Mourneabbey and the Tipperary ladies to All-Ireland glory before taking on the Waterford job.

Back in 2016, Ronayne was touted for the Cork ladies football post, having served as selector for two years.

Although Ephie Fitzgerald hasn't offically stepped down, despite his term having come to an end following Cork's surprise All-Ireland semi-final loss to Meath, the Rebel ladies are on the lookout for a new manager.
