Clare’s hopes of retaining the Liam MacCarthy Cup this summer have been dealt a significant blow with the news that ace attacker Shane O’Donnell has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

O’Donnell won back-to-back All-Star awards over the past two years and was named 2024 Hurler of the Year after his county’s All-Ireland SHC triumph last summer.

The Eire Og Ennis clubman hasn't featured in any of Clare’s Allianz League outings this season and the reason for that is clear now following yesterday’s news.

The 35-year-old underwent surgery on his shoulder three weeks ago and, as a result, will miss the Banner men’s Munster championship round-robin games along with the All-Ireland series.

It comes as a major blow to Brian Lohan’s men who have already lost their first three outings in Division 1A this season, with the latest defeat to Wexford last weekend leaving them in a relegation battle with a showdown against Limerick at the TUS Gaelic Ground to come this Sunday (3.45pm).
