Micheál Martin has said he is “annoyed” and “deeply disappointed” at the proposal to rename Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Taking to X before last night’s Cork county board meeting, the Tánaiste and Cork South Central TD expressed his dismay at plans to sell the naming rights to retail giants SuperValu in a deal believes to be worth €250,000 per year. Mr Martin described former GAA director-general Pádraig Ó Caoimh – after whom the stadium is named – as "a key figure in the formation of the GAA at club and national level."
The Tánaiste referenced the Government's €30 million contribution to the rebuild between 2014 and 2017, saying the State "never sought naming rights."
He tweeted: “Deeply disappointed and annoyed at the proposal to change the name of Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Pádraig Uí Chaoimh was a key figure in the formation of the GAA at club and national level.
“Govt allocated €30m towards the development of the stadium and never sought naming rights.”
