Tooreen are Mayo senior hurling champions for the fourth year in-a-row after edging out rivals Ballyhaunis by 1-21 to 0-22 after extra time.

After an airtight opening 15 minutes in Tooreen, the holders netted the game’s only goal through Liam Lavin but it wouldn’t be enough for them to lead at half-time as points from Cormac Phillips, Keith Higgins and Ryan Kilbane had Ballyhaunis up by 0-11 to 1-6 when the sides went in.

Tooreen would hit the front 10 minutes into the second-half and doubled their lead via a Shane Boland free before Shane Crenningan stretched it out to three.

Beaten in the last three county finals by the same opposition, Ballyhaunis battled back and it was Phillips’ free in the second minute of injury-time that sent this decider to extra time.

It would be tit-for-tat in the first half of the added periods ahead of Boland eventually putting some daylight between the teams again that saw Tooreen win out by two in the end.
