Ulster GAA has expressed "deep sorrow and profound shock" at the passing of its former president Oliver Galligan.

The Cavan native served as the 37th President of the Ulster Council from 2019 to 2022.

He also held positions as PRO, treasurer and vice-president with the provincial body and was on the Central Competitions Control Committee and Croke Park Stadium Board.

During his playing days, Mr Galligan lined out for Cavan at senior level from 1969 to 1973 and would captain his county to Ulster minor success in 1967.

He was a lifelong member of the Cavan Gaels club, winning three county titles with the Gaels before going on to serve as club chairman and also become an integral part of the Cavan county board for a decade-and-a-half prior to joining the Ulster Council as an officer in 2010.

Mr Galligan passed away on Monday and his funeral mass will take place today (Thursday) in the Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim, Cavan at 1pm.

"Ulster GAA expresses profound sorrow at Oliver's passing and we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Frances, his sons John and Oliver (Jnr), his daughter Elaine (Peter), and the wider Galligan family circle during this time of great loss,” read a statement from Ulster GAA.

"We remember also his colleagues at Cavan Gaels and in Cavan GAA. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all."
