Castletown Geoghegan landed their second Westmeath senior hurling championship crown in three years by seeing off Lough Lene Gaels (1-27 to 2-17) at TEG Cusack Park this afternoon.
After last Sunday’s decider was called off 13 minutes in due to inclement weather conditions in Mullingar, Castletown Geoghegan got the job done here to join Brownstown and Raharney on 15 SHC titles on the roll of honour list which Clonkill (17) currently lead in the Lake County.
A third minute goal from David O’Reilly (1-5) set the tone early for the 2022 champions before Lough Lene Gaels got it level thanks to the points of Eoin Daly and David Williams.
Castletown went three in front again but the Gaels came up with the perfect response via a Aaron Kennedy goal in the 19th minute, but the would-be winners finished out the half strong with the points of Niall O’Brien (2, 1 free) and O’Reilly to lead by 1-11 to 1-9 at the half.
The second-half saw Alan Mangan’s men up their lead to five midway through and more scores from O’Brien (‘65’), O’Reilly and substitute Peter Murphy had the scoreboard reading 1-24 to 1-17 down the home stretch.
The Gaels would grab their second goal on the hour mark through sub Jason Malone, however points via Jack Gallagher, O’Brien (free) and Murphy ensured another Westmeath Examiner Cup for the men in black and amber.
