Gaelic Players Association CEO Tom Parsons has led tributes to former Dublin footballer Darragh Nelson, who has passed away at the age of 36 following a four-year battle with cancer.

Parsons paid tribute to Nelson’s contribution to Gaelic games and offered his sympathies to those closest to the former Dublin player, acknowledging the significant loss felt throughout the GAA community.

“On behalf of the GPA I would like to express my condolences to Darragh’s family, friends and all involved in Ballyboden St Enda’s and Dublin football on such a huge loss,” Parsons said.

Nelson captained Ballyboden St Enda’s to a historic All-Ireland senior club football title in 2016, completing a remarkable Dublin, Leinster and All-Ireland treble during the 2015/16 season.

A hugely influential figure for club and county, he won three Dublin senior championships and two Leinster titles with Ballyboden. He was also part of Dublin’s All-Ireland-winning senior panels in 2011 and 2013, winning two National Football League titles during his inter-county career.

Ballyboden remembered Nelson as a quiet, unassuming character away from the pitch but a warrior on it, while former teammate Darren O’Reilly praised his leadership and the respect he commanded within the dressing room.

Following his retirement as a player, Nelson continued to contribute to Dublin football, working with the county’s underage teams and serving as part of the Dublin U20 coaching set-up.

His passing leaves a profound sense of loss across the Dublin GAA community, where he will be remembered for his achievements, leadership and commitment to his club and county.
