Mayo made it two wins from two in the Connacht U20 football championship yesterday evening after seeing off Galway by 2-18 to 3-13 at Tuam Stadium.
Josh Carey’s goal saw the visitors storming in front four minutes before half-time, when they’d go in with a 1-9 to 1-7 lead, with Éanna Monaghan bagging the Tribesmen’s major in the 13th minute.
The second-half would see the visitors fall behind again thanks to Colm Costello’s goal and they’d add another before Tom Lydon struck a crucial goal for Mayo with five minutes to go and a two-pointer from Darragh Beirne in the closing stages would secure the victory for Peadar Gardiner’s side.
Meanwhile, Roscommon got their first win of the campaign after seeing off holders Sligo by 1-16 to 0-10 at Dr Hyde Park.
John Curran’s goal in the opening five minutes set the tone for the Rossies and the points of John McGuinness, Ryan Dowling and Rory Carthy would send them towards a 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead.
A Curran two-pointer stretched the hosts’ lead to five early in the restart and, while Sligo would pull it back to within four, Ruairi Kilcline, Carthy and Eoin Collins all hit points down the home stretch to ensure Roscommon’s victory.
