The late champion jockey Pat Smullen would have been fiercely proud of his youngest daughter Sarah after she helped the Offaly U14 girls football team to All-Ireland glory last Saturday.

Lining out at midfield alongside her Rhode club-mate and namesake Sarah Kellaghan, Sarah was a key figure in the Faithful’s 4-5 to 2-6 victory over Donegal in the All-Ireland Championship ‘Silver’ final at Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim. Sarah went off injured, only to return to the fray and help her team get across the line.

Sarah’s older sister Hannah was also in the news recently after she rode her first winner at Tramore. Fittingly, the horse, named Fillusin, was owned by her mother and trainer Frances Crowley, and trained by Gordon Elliott.

Pat, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2020, was champion jockey on no fewer than nine occasions and rode almost 2,000 winners worldwide. He was stable jockey to renowned trainer Dermot Weld for 20 years.
