Surely the management should be instructing him to play it short as part of our game plan if so?

Well lads still in shock at our 1st half performance sat night.. although we improved in 2nd half think kk were in 2nd or 3rd gear..are we gone backwards or what is the story.. I still think our game plan or moving ball from backs and carrying ball into the tackle is killing us.. we havnt got physical players to play this game.. just extremely worried now we wil be in a dog fight with Antrim and Offaly to see who stays up hope I'm wrong but just worried who we will have available come 2nd week or April.. hopefully we can get at least 10 of our starting championship team on the field for the Galway or limerick game.. as the league is a right off now all should be in our heads is championship.. also on the injury situation are we so far behind teams in regards physical size that we are getting hit so hard that is causing injury's or is it our training schedule… as regards Mac rumours seen him at game sat night so is still in panel.. my team for championship gannett83 (Wexford) - Posts: 304 - 11/02/2025 16:55:29 2590642 Link 0 |

Agreed on Lawlor back to midfield. Watched him closely the last day and I don't think he has the required defensive instincts for half back. Not much fun playing in our full back line the last day in the first half with our three half backs all doing their own thing! There's a lot of it's and buts in the team above but it's where we are at right now. Id be thinking to try Rory at 11 and Chin on wing (or else at 6!). Rory likely to pick up more loose ball out there and keep their 6 honest if he decides to drop off. Timbertony (Wexford) - Posts: 367 - 11/02/2025 16:57:26 2590644 Link 0 |
I'd probably put that down to there being no ball winner in the half forward line unless Chin is playing and out that far.

That may be so Viking but from my vantage point on Sunday we are not able to play a a short game. The problem with our forwards is that either the ball going in there is not a forwards ball or forwards are not making enough runs, etc and making space. Or both. So backs and forwards are not on the same page. I was watching on RTE Player and its hard to see what is going off the ball but one or other or both of these must be true. A lived experience from me. When a group of us who had won a minor and U21 titles came in to the senior team and two of the more senior players told us it was up to us to push the 3-4 older players off the team and the rest of the older ones off the panel and if we did not do this in the following 2 years we would be playing intermediate when they left. That the retired players were not pushed off the team says that either the young players never got a chance, were not giving it or were not good enough. One final point I will make, it must be morale sapping for these players but every player will benefit more from playing Limerick and Tipp and Cork than they will Antrim and Westmeath and Laois and we will find that out to our cost next season. Want to be the best, you want to play the best. Not looking for an easy ride. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 1804 - 11/02/2025 20:57:51 2590668 Link 1 |
His timing isn't right with them, he holds the ball too long sometimes so a lad who made a quick dart into space isn't open anymore, and he overhits them also. Sent a few out over the sideline this year. He's cut out the bad errors otherwise, and is still a good shot stopper. He also held Keoghan up long enough for Dunbar to sprint back to maybe hook him when he scored the 1st goal, only Dunbar jogged off in a different direction. The two best players against Limerick(ciaran gethings and Sean o brien) were missing against Cork, hear O brien was everywhere against Limerick (top class) Cork were also missing a few.. Wexfordabu25 (Wexford) - Posts: 4 - 11/02/2025 22:53:38 2590675 Link 0 |
I disagree with you on that one Paul negative comment, we don't win many competitions in underage at all ,good achievement for those chaps to win a arrabawn shield ,

What about the Byrne lad playing with dcu?I've seen him on a few occasions and he looks very comfortable playing ball short or long..next Saturday is a huge test for him in fitz final v ul..at this time he is ticking a lot of the right boxes. I agree to extent that the prevailing wisdom is that you learn more by playing the best however when the gulf in lass is very wide you also learn little. Then again who is doing the learning, management or the players. Management will learn that the they players are not good enough on that day but does it tell them how good they are and if they every will improve. The players these days learn from post game analysis but during the game I don't think they learn very much. So in my view and remember there is no scientific evidence of studies on the matter that I know would support one or the other view - you need to playing against team better and ones you would consider at the same level or lower - at the moment everyone in D1 is higher. Btw - what makes you think we would beat Antrim/Westmeath or Laois in the League at the moment.

Of course they will. But you have to earn that right. So far we haven't earned the right to stay up, we have no points. There are very few lads in around the 1st team who are between 22 and 27 is the problem there when you are playing counties who have a good cohort that age. We haven't many from 27 to 30 either. They are physically more developed than 20-22 year olds.

I think everyone would agree with that. It's just most unfortunate that our panel is so depleted right now. Teams have won the all Ireland from 1b. There's still Dublin, Antrim and Offaly who we'll be playing in the championship and of course Waterford who've struggled in recent years but are still a good side so it's not is if you're not getting decent games. At the age and level of experience our finishing team was the last day there would be great value in those games. I agree you want to be testing yourself at the very top. That's great if you're blooding 3 or 4 fringe players but a different story if you're missing the spine of your team and putting out lads who've never played senior or in the same 15 before. Assuming we are going down, with a year under their belts and an ok championship with some leadership back 1b could be a good place for us to get the small things right next year. I will say it would be a disaster if we ended up stuck there for a good few years again though. We put so much in to come back up and achieved some success immediately afterwards but they were tough years. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3412 - 12/02/2025 08:26:53 2590689 Link 0 |

These are only challenge games but it's important to be competitive in them from the confidence point of view.

Agree 100% he's alot quicker than some of the other better keepers in the county. Paddy Quigley was good that way with the minors last year also, hopefully he keeps improving.
