Noel mannion This is well before my time. So don't know off top of my head so guessing Why do I have. To answer to you. Why does flake not have to justify anything he says to anyone? KillingFields (Limerick) - Posts: 3674 - 18/11/2024 18:24:47 2580197 Link 0 |
Ignoring a post when it's pointed out the previous discussion on this. Again. TheFlaker (Mayo) - Posts: 8155 - 18/11/2024 19:25:10 2580206 Link 0 |
Why don't you actually respond to my points. Again.

You were saying you have good knowledge of Connacht Rugby? Mannion played Gaelic Football for Galway but wasn't as famed in GAA circles as the two men in question. Much better known for his rugby career. The 2 men have 4 Celtic crosses and 7 All Stars between them.

A very poor debate last night… I got fed up of it after about 40 minutes… Katie Hannon very poor at conducting things… and typically of RTE , they placed the 2 cosy parties FF/FG side by side so they could tittle tattle between themselves when others were speaking… Nauseating stuff… but as I said typical of RTE…. Let's face it they gave RTÉ a small fortune to save the station so they were going to get away with what ever they wanted..stopped watching after the hour, couldn't believe the behaviour of the so called big 2,and never told to shut up by moderator..yet mlm was told she had more time than anyone..also very strange trying a debate with 10 talkers.. I get your point but just to clarify, WE gave them a small fortune, literally all of rte's income is from us, advertising included.

The Week In Politics is another show that is getting away with it, for example the Presenter asks a loaded question to a member of the panel, before he / she gets time to answer the question the presenter will butt in and talk over the person she asked the question to put he or she off, they have perfected the art of swinging the debate to suit the mood of the day, garrulous included. supersub15 (Carlow) - Posts: 3050 - 19/11/2024 12:23:44 2580295 Link 1 |
100% In fairness it's not easy for the government to find the money to fund RTE! All the cash they get in tax returns from broadcast and internet-related activity, including online sales that peak at this time of year. They still enforce a charge for a 1962 licence, back when none of this revenue could have been possible.

I don't know how anyone can watch RTE anymore, they are just a mouthpiece for the establishment. The election is a foregone conclusion, FF/FG will be back with some group or party propping them up, maybe labour or an 'independent' group of some sort, the rest of it is all hot air and a waste of time, stupid posters with their ugly mugs on every telephone pole and leaflets that go straight into the fire. Question: Why do you think FF/FG will get back in? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 19/11/2024 17:21:44 2580345 Link 0 |
There are a small percentage of people in Ireland in terrible poverty and life is incredibly tough for them. However, I'm really tired of the constant talk of a cost of living crisis. When we were kids in the 80s, we didn't go on foreign holidays, my father didn't drink, we never went out for breakfast or lunch. A meal out was only for First Communions. We didn't have Sky TV or it's equivalent, we had one car. All our clothes were handed down. But my father paid for our school books, we had plenty to eat, he paid for our doctors appointments, and we had a stay at home Mam which was our childcare. It's not a popular opinion but half the people who go on about cost of living crisis have plenty of money for city breaks, amazon prime, net flix, Oasis tickets, Electric Picnic, regular take aways, coffees on the go, Center Parcs, Kildare Village, etc etc. But they expect the government to foot the bill for all the priority things like health insurance, child care, school books etc. These arguments take from those who really need government support such as carers, elderly living alone, children with special needs and so on. Well it's obvious to me from the numbers, they won't go in with SF so it has to be FF/FG plus a smaller party, the only question is will FF or FG get the most seats and who will be Taoiseach, that's my read of it anyway, we'll know by Saturday week.

There's quite a bit of truth in that but a couple of paradoxes too. Do you not think we're a wealthy enough state to have free healthcare and education? You're totally correct about some people today just making bad financial decisions to keep up with the Joneses. I know about a hundred people complaining they can't save a deposit for a house but have a new Audi on PCP finance. Also a key point is the stay at home mam thing. That's reserved for the super wealthy now. The numbers don't lie either. This is the first generation in the history of the capitalist system to be better education but financially worse off than their parents. Yet the government are falling way behind in supporting the group of people you mention… Does this not say more about the gomeless government we have rather than those going on so called city breaks…?

With the greatest respect to your father, did he have to pay a huge chunk of his income on a mortgage?

Also by the by, childcare and nursing homes are a modern day scam. huge money being made and the workers certainly aren't seeing any of it

Doyler, for me, it's arguable that there's better education than our parents time. I'm 56 so we'll say parents education time was 60 years ago. It's never been easier to get a qualification. Private colleges are advertising for courses, Springboard have cheap courses, the quality and practical learning on those courses is questionable. There's plenty of young people walking around with degrees, Masters, Doctorates that they got in online college using simulators for projects. They can pass exams but would struggle to cook a dinner, change a plug or sew a button their shirt. Even 30 years ago you had a good practical grasp of college subjects and lecturers had a genuine interest in improving your knowledge. Yet many of the current graduates think a qualification, with little experience, means they should be earning enough to buy a house. Maybe an old fashioned view but do a bit of grafting first. Your PCP story is a great one, for 2024. I know plenty like that. Complain about not affording a deposit but ignoring their new electric car they paid through their noses for to impress the neighbours. I reluctantly got a Revolut card recently. Reluctant because I'm not convinced there won't be charges at some stage. Plus lads I know only have one to send money to each other for betting. Signed up and lo and behold, I can get a loan easily, or bet on stocks! Seems it's never been easier to get finance for what you want, no penalties if you pay on time. But too many, especially this time of year, can get into a debt spiral buying stuff they don't need and wonder why a bank, who check all their spending and loans, refuse their mortgage application.
