there a proposal to restructure the league and championship in Monaghan. 12 senior, 12 intermediate and 6 junior. No relegation from senior or intermediate in 2025 to obtain the numerical balance. The thought process for this is to have more of our county team playing senior football. a more competitive championship at senior and intermediate. Reduce the chances of teams get promoted one year and relegated the next. 6 teams in junior could be the stumbling block. However the possibility of some of the larger clubs following the Scotsman example and entering teams could work.

I'm going to head over to but don't know if it will go ahead by sounds of forecast this evening.. Brannigan has went fairly strong on the starting lineup… dunno if that's a reflection on the lack of back up options available or else the short window to the start of the national league and trying to grasp and implement these new rules….

Paid the 10 to watch game on TV. Thought was decent watch although obviously a challenge game. It was more to see how team and players mgmt were motoring. Thought we looked good in the core areas 1st half less so in second half when subs were brought in. Woods Jones combined well and hopefully more of that at county level. Midfield was decent with Scotstown lads looking big presence. Mcbennett Hamil mcenespie looked sharp. Just a challenge match but positive show. I liked how team dug in to get result when mayo were well on top. This team were brutal last year and players been v disappointed in themselves so important to start year well. Course means jack if we don't show up v cavan in first game of league. If one of mooney Jones or garland can nail a regular spot as dangerman inside be big boost. Have lacked that in recent times.

Would largely agree with ur summary of match… typical challenge match feel to it so hard to take much out of it…the intensity will ratch up up about 5 gears for the Cavan game…for a start last nights midfield would be wiped out of it when it's comes to crunch time…. someone said in another post that mayo are all Ireland contenders, no chance mayo are as far away as a lighthouse in terms of Sam…

We can't really still be considering Garland .. must be 6/7 years now of the same old preseason .. then dosnt make it

It's hard to read too much into a pre-season game. There were something's that from a supporters view you'd be looking for - like would the effort and work rate be there. And largely it was. The big thing I'd like to see from last year is an improvement on unforced turnovers and improved discipline. For the most part, there were signs last night that this is a focus. Obviously the new rules are still getting a lot used to and dissent will be harshly punished (mayo got caught a few times for not handing the ball back to Monaghan players after fouls). Andy Moran was roaring at Monaghan players when they did foul to give the ball back quickly. So that bodes well.

The conditions were very tricky for both teams. Of the new players, Dylan Byrne was on Ryan O'Donoghue and did all right on him but didn't standout either. McPhillips was good in midfield but I'd need to convinced on his long term merit. Aaron Carey showed he has potential. It was harder to judge the new players introduced from half time onwards as the game became naturally fractured due to the raft of new players brought in. Of the them Doogan-Burke looks very assured. Ronan Boyle was secure and safe, Sean Callan has bags of pace and worth another run-out.

On Garland, the thing that sticks out , is that the new rules should suit him, yet the ball just didn't stick to him when he made his runs, in the same way that it did for Stephen Mooney. Can see Mooney having a breakthrough year in 2025.

Again, it's hard to take too much out of it but compared to last years shitshow game v Donegal in Blayney during the McKenna cup there were more positives than negatives to take out of the Mayo game.

Thought about that donegal game in blayney last year watching game last night as well. Youd much prefer to see last nights display to be fair going into new season. Look comments are right it was a challenge game but the lads looked tuned in at least.
