Apologies if I hit a nerve, never my intention to suggest that you or anyone else cannot express their opinion on this forum, sure that's the very purpose of the forum. But of course I too can have an opinion and I don't have to agree with you. I can understand the disappointment of those invested in Dublin hurling with the news of EOD's move to the footballers. My only issue is with the use of the word poached which has connotations of underhandedness, stealth and illegality. Personally I have no problem taking EOD's statement at face value "that he always had an ambition to give county football a shot and now at 28 the clock was ticking" and also O' Ceallacháin's saying that he was already aware that the player had an ambition to play with the Dublin footballers. Intercounty football and hurling requires full personal commitment from a player and I don't believe either Farrell or O'Ceallacháin would be interested in a player who needed inducing or cajoling to come on board. Comfortable enough for Na Fianna in the end. Not sure of the wisdom of their style on a sticky pitch but it worked out well enough and bit of class told. One thing they have learned is that you have to get down and dirty if you are going to win anything. That probably delayed their arrival at top table in Dublin but judging from yesterday it is a lesson well learned. Something that Ó Ceallacháin needs to imbed in the county team. It seems to me that Dublin football has been the biggest obstacle to the development and success of Dublin hurling for many a year. After coming within a few minutes of beating Tipp in 1961 and when Heffernan basically took over the football he tacitly barred Vinnies players from playing county hurling. So that's Fenton gone now too after McCarthy's recent announcement. There are rumours of a few more to follow still. Jack Mc, John Small and Mannion I've heard anyway. WOW - Fento retires at only 31. Still in his prime. Irreplaceable tbh. He won 7x All-Ireland medals during his 10 seasons for the Dubs, as well as 10x Leinster medals & 4x National Football League titles. He was awarded 2 Player of the Year awards in that time, as well as 6x All-Star awards. IMO he widely recognised as one of the greatest midfielders in the game. Forever remembered as a vital part of the Dublin team that created history with 6x consecutive Senior Football Titles, A gentleman on and off the field. He will be massively missed by most GAA fans. Fenton ........What a player. The only one I can remember in the same class was Jack O'Se (the 80's are my earliest memory!!!). Congrats on a great career. Massive loss to Dublin. He was still flying as good as ever. When I think of Brian Fenton, I think of someone who looks like he is hardly moving but no one can catch him. Hugely athletic. Always good for a few scores as well. We caught ye last year but I would have had ye as favs again this year for the AI. This changes things a bit I think. That's the heart and the engine pulled out of the Dubs next year. Wonderful footballer, greatest midfielder ever in my opinion, amazingly privileged to have seen him and enjoyed him. I'm not going to write an ending here, I'm not wholly convinced that's the last we will see of him in Sky Blue. In the in between, thanks for everything and enjoy Fento. You owe Dublin nothing. Irreplaceable talent, one of the greatest. But, he will be replaced. New leaders to come to the front, it won't be the last retirement, there's plenty of quality in Dublin and its up to them to carry the fight, which they 100% will do. I think all the #9 players will go. But again, players wil always call it a day. It's about what they left behind. It was a record setting era and we all got to enjoy some of the greatest players ever to wear blue win bucket loads of medals. Now it's time for a younger, hungry setup to go and try and establish themselves and achieve. There will still be a good mix of experience in the panel. If anything, this all just wants me to get up and go supporting, can't wait for 2025 and I'll be going to as many games as possible.
