That Meath team should have beaten Offaly but were undone by a late goal in the last minute, a long hopeful ball in that found its way to the net. Not a bad Meath side. Westmeath led by 10 pts at half time and midway through the second half led 3-15-1-07. They knew at 14 pts up they were comfortable and towards the end of the game they switched off particularly in the backline. Im sure McKeogh will make sure they don't become complacent and finish strongly no matter what the scoreline is going forward. I was impressed with Aherne at full back, Dillon Burke in midfield and Conor Williams at corner forward. I think Burke got 0-07 from play from midfield which is fair going, big strong hurler. Antrim and Offaly will be a step up, hopefully we can keep improving.

The Meath attack made our defence look very porous in last fifteen minutes, three goals that could have easily been five or six, our forwards didn't do enough at that stage to stem the flow of ball, there was an opportunity to annihilate Meath at one stage, instead it was a nervy last fifteen minutes with only Burke showing the required fight and leadership. Winning the group is vital, coming second means away game to Laois. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 16/04/2025 09:31:42 2602173 Link 0 |
Well capable of winning the group, there's quality there all across the field but despite winning the game by 9 pts its a fair assessment to say we were complacent and definitely switched off in the last 10/15 minutes which won't be good enough going forward. When we led 3-15-1-07 midway through second half that was the time to push on and be ruthless. The good news is they can definitely improve and get better. Good management there also. If we could get good fast quality ball into Padraic Monaghan, Conor Williams, Cian McKeogh and MJ Long we can cause a lot of problems as we did in the first half in particular

Meath strong finish more a case of Westmeath taking their foot of the gas than good Meath hurling ,although you'd wonder why they didn't move No.8 to full forward earlier as we struggled to control him when they did. Overall though it was a poor Meath display ,our forwards had lots of space which wont be available further on . We also had 3/4 players starting that played a tough football game 48hrs earlier which is not ideal. Bigger tests to come .

Team news posted for the seniors hurlers. It looks good on paper. Any insights as to form and fitness of the panel? Not to mention morale… 35OLT (USA) - Posts: 101 - 18/04/2025 21:21:11 2602660 Link 0 |
Johnny Birmingham is a loss, good to have jogger back. Davy Williams must be able for some sort of an appearance. Big game, hopefully we can do it. stonemadbeany (USA) - Posts: 607 - 19/04/2025 11:05:27 2602717 Link 0 |
Jogger named so hopefully that team starts. Good training camp held in Waterford recently and a good response to new coach after OBrien walked. Hopefully Mitch can rediscover some form. Joe McD very competitive but I'll be backing them to beat Laois at 7/4 - fool and their money etc.

Hard see comeback here. R missed too much more worrying can't win clean ball and backs getting ran through. Gaaforlife2023 (Longford) - Posts: 686 - 19/04/2025 15:39:58 2602769 Link 0 |
Very poor first half here, reasonably competitive in first ten mins but outplayed since, eight down at half time, hard to see us coming back. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 19/04/2025 15:40:37 2602771 Link 0 |
RIP Westmeath Hurling. Christy Ring has been good to us in the past and hopefully it will be next year too. ear2ground (Westmeath) - Posts: 123 - 19/04/2025 16:06:41 2602775 Link 1 |

Kildare game already looking like a relegation decider, they were annihilated by Carlow, we're in bit quite similar territory but not far off it, Laois way sharper, our defence is unable to cope, Laois fitter too. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 19/04/2025 16:29:29 2602785 Link 0 |
The worst display by a Westmeath hurling team in championship in many years. We will be very lucky to avoid being relegated.Apparantly the players are running the show.Well it's a perfect example of why we need someone who can manage. Any of the top club managers in the county could do better.

Our fitness levels are nowhere near good enough, the modern game lasts 78-79 minutes, it's going to be a factor over next 4 weeks, Kildare away next Saturday will define our season, another defeat and we're pretty much eliminated from contention as we have no hope of beating Carlow. Avoiding relegation is prob the team's aim. Claretandblue (Westmeath) - Posts: 2131 - 19/04/2025 16:55:02 2602792 Link 0 |
Westmeath will face a battle to stay in the Joe McDonagh which I flagged here a few months ago.. Matthew (None) - Posts: 1077 - 19/04/2025 17:50:55 2602815 Link 0 |
We've seen most of these players play at such a high level yet they look like there is no plan right now. I don't know what is going on. It's shocking to see. They don't look anything like a team. The worst part of it, is the fact it's not a complete new team that were blooding loads of young lads and it's going to be a learning curve. It's ended up back at the same players. Fair play to those players going back in and putting the shoulder to the wheel but what direction are we trying to go? Gaawestmeath (Westmeath) - Posts: 95 - 19/04/2025 18:04:17 2602823 Link 0 |
Home from Portlaoise. Very poor display apart from 1st Quarter of game. Players looked disjointed and very unfit. First touch terrible. Laois solid but only that and yet they powered home easily. On display today, we might beat Down maybe Kildare but that's highly debatable. Likely to be Laois v Carlow final I reckon. Robbie Greville probably only player up to scratch today.
