It's a sad state of affairs. My own club have been seriously hampered by emigration in the past two years. Young lads just want to see the world and if your not competing for senior championships it's hard not to go. Ah it's not that sad really. This isn't the emigration of the 50s or 80s or even the early 2010s. Most of those going now will be back and you'll find a lot will probably play for their clubs again. It's just that we're losing them at their peak years. But I wouldn't discourage any young fella from going for a couple of years to see a bit of the world (even if there's no one to plug a gaping hole in our defence and we've no one able to take a free from the right!). Further to that, if managers were more flexible about lads doing their own training and not having to trek from somewhere 3 or 4 times a week to the local pitch after a hard days work or college lectures there might not be as many people pulling back from it. Lads want to play football, not be bombarded with training sessions. And also be let enjoy themselves in one of the most important periods of their lives socially, drinking bans etc are silly.

Do clubs not organise to get lads in training with a club anymore? In my day, we got in with clubs in Dublin or facilitated other clubs with our own man who took training. There's a fine line with what you're talking about... no harm a lad enjoying themselves but some might as well stay at home as enjoyment can go too far. That being said, the young lads these days are probably more healthy conscious and don't necessarily need alcohol to have a good time.

Two big defeats for our representatives over the weekend, it shows how far off the pace our club football is. Hope I'm wrong but doubt Mohill will buck the trend next weekend against Pearses.

Think the restructuring of championships will help at Junior and intermediate in coming years . They will be harder won championships than heretofore . Also why are Leitrim clubs kicking their heels idle for 4-5 weeks and ending up going in rusty against battle hardened opponents in Connacht competition. I don't think it is C board's fault that they get their championships wrapped up a few weeks before other counties- we have less clubs and (thankfully now) less teams per championships than most other counties. Proof that the split season means little to getting things wrapped up sooner, one option may be saving 1/2 league rounds plus a final for Sept/Oct but unless a team has something to play for it will likely be conceded, you can't win, lads want and deserve their down time as well gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 565 - 11/11/2024 12:47:51 2579215 Link 0 |

No one is, we are aware our club scene is weak thank you very much. Ourselves, Sligo and Roscommon are at the same level or thereabouts. Mayo and Galway streets ahead of the rest.

Can't agree with that. Mayo and Galway historically and yes but at this moment in time the Rossies are and have been able to beat both Galway and Mayo. Pearce's are also hot favs for the Connacht title. Roscommon are miles ahead of Leitrim and Sligo (although Sligo are doing great work and could close the gap). They should have beaten Galway this year.
