It looks like giving Joyce another year of the same isnt going to work out. I thought Mayo would win but the manner of the performance was like lads were introduced to each other for first time before the match. I think we won one long ball into midfield which is a trait that we have developed over the last number of years where we never seem to win much ball in midfield. Roscommon next and lose that and we are facing relegation. We were missing Cooke today who would have battled for the ball. Heaney, Tierney anonymous I thought Tierney was injured anyway. Anytime we actually attacking the lads passed the ball so badly it made it a 50/50 that Mayo usually won. Probably the worst performance under Joyce and that's saying something. Galway have always been a soft bellied team it's the genetics there. Molloy and finnerty joking and smiling with their markers when they should be busting into them, no bite no metal no teeth. Galway management pick good footballers but most those lads won't go to war for you, you have to be a horrible person to play against Sportsfanatic90 (Westmeath) - Posts: 223 - 28/01/2024 16:40:30 2522714 Link 1 |
Padraic Joyce confirms Peter Cooke isn't part of the squad for 2024. Cillian McDaid likely won't play any part of the league. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2290 - 28/01/2024 16:42:37 2522718 Link 0 |
You could tell from the warm up and the intensity of it, Mayo were just full steam ahead. Galway just didn't look up to the intensity of it and heavy legged, I wouldn't read a thing into this. There is a long way to go and a lot of football to be played. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1632 - 28/01/2024 16:44:19 2522721 Link 0 |

Very poor 2 day if Galway are playing with a goal keeper coming out the field Gleason definitely not the man for that need start putting players in best position need forwards in forwards Darcy , Heaney , Daly , sweeney not forwards need get pace into half back line John Daly always struggled when center forward moves him across the half back line Mulkerrins no pace or treat goung forward I know it's only first Match but in 4 weeks we have 3 played so not much time sort things out , Kickitout (Galway) - Posts: 952 - 28/01/2024 16:48:38 2522726 Link 0 |
For anyone who thinks our goalkeeper isn't a problem stick on the second half of Roscommon against Tyrone to see pace of setting up on the tee, accuracy off the tee, retaining possession and comfortable on the ball...and the worst part is, one of them is an Oranmore man. smallfrank (Galway) - Posts: 442 - 28/01/2024 17:07:47 2522732 Link 1 |
Galway not at it at all today. Mayo not even at our best…wouldn't read too much into the first 1st league game. That said and I said it before today Mayo won't be challenging for Sam this year but I don't don't if Galway will either. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11399 - 28/01/2024 17:18:58 2522737 Link 1 |
We all know that. It doesn't mean today's performance wasn't extremely poor.

Rossies lose to 14 man Tyrone. Roscommon v Galway next weekend a 4 pointer. Whoever loses will be in serious bother in terms of staying in division 1.

Yes Roscommon had a good goalkeeper but little else today in losing to 14 man Tyrone. Darragh Canavan excellent for the red hands. The losers of Roscommon v Galway next week will be in a spot of bother.

Might need 4 points for it, for either of these sides to remain in div1! Unfortunately, there will be only 2pts awarded, and the winner will 1.5/2 additional wins to get the 5/6 points usually needed for survival. Mayo might 'pull up' after 3or4 wins this year, which could be an additional dynamic, as it was last year when Monaghan were beneficiaries. Mayo won't be disrupting their championship two years running for NFL heroics. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3868 - 28/01/2024 17:48:53 2522756 Link 0 |

PJ's management record against Mayo. 1 win from 9 games. Yikes. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2290 - 28/01/2024 18:05:16 2522765 Link 1 |
Big Kevin had a far better record with arguably a worse team

And get over they will I'm afraid. Ros well ahead in fitness, hunger and actual game plan. A lot of faith eroded from what I saw in Galway today. Hate to say it but mgmt need to buck up in a major way. Waste of time and money and energy today for our supporters
