I'm not on this thread to talk about Limerick. Why don't you go on the Limerick thread and tell them how wonderful they are. They'll appreciate it I'm sure! It's not all about winning - you'd do well to reflect on the recent tragic news from Athenry, Killala and Sligo and tell them it's all about winning. Good luck now. baire (Galway) - Posts: 1849 - 21/04/2022 16:30:07 2412130 Link 0 |

" Limerick were going to come anyway, having moulded their style on KK e.g size, power and strength." The style of the current Limerick team is not like any of Cody's successful Kilkenny teams. And there was nothing unusual about the 'size' of the Kilkenny players, in that they were no bigger than players of other counties. Whoever has money that they earned have a right to sponsor whoever they like, what most people on this page can't understand is why a certain few Limerick supporters have to come on here try to rise an argument.

Listen here Baire there is no sub thing as a level Playing field, as regards Financial Backing, and there never has been. We will take Cork for example. At any one time in the past they have had 2.5 the number of hurlers Galway had and about five times that of my county. Back in the day the attendances at several Cork County Hurling Finals exceeded 30,000 and I was there myself in '76 when 36,000 was recorded, when hundreds more were admitted free, in scenes of utter chaos. By contrast, I think Galway attract on average about 10,000 for such occasions, while Limerick only ever get about half that for their Final and much less if there is a city team involved. They (Cork) have been sponsored by the Tea Magnate Barrys a group that have been Millionaires for decades and now by the Billionaire Sports Direct Tycoon and yet they have gone almost 20 years without winning a hurling title and if the performance of the Under 20s last night is anything to go by it could go even longer before ultimate success is achieved. Kilkenny have a Hurling Academy going with decades since Father Tommy Murphy decided something had to done to correct what he perceived as a decline in KK Hurling Standards. I have never heard anybody complaining of KK having an affair advantage and why should there be any complaints about it. What is wrong with physical size in county hurlers, Look at all the fine big strapping men Galway had in their fairly recent All Ireland winning teams, Tell me when a team of midgets ever won an All Senior Hurling title. Who are 'the three or four skillful hurlers' in the Limerick team and more to the point could you identify the eleven that are not skillful. Finally Baire, by virtue of the relatively small number of hurlers in Limerick at any one time, we will only have a really all conquering team- like Galway-, about once every forty years. We are very lucky to have had three different teams that won more that one All Ireland. Sadly two of them were before my time. Well, Baire good to see you talking sense at last. Sincere Sympathy to all concerned in those e tragic events. There was a Moran man playing with Athenry, when the beat Graige- Ballycallan in an All Ireland Club Final, about twenty years ago. The fact that hurling has remained strong in Galway, Limerick, Clare, Wexford, Waterford and Laois, etc, despite long losing sequences does indeed confirm it is not all about winning. However as John Doyle once said 'winning is not the most important thing-it is the only thing'. Oldtourman (Limerick) - Posts: 4490 - 21/04/2022 20:03:50 2412166 Link 0 |
Some inferiority complex he has, to be fair. Jealousy/envy is such a weak emotion. Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 906 - 21/04/2022 21:21:52 2412175 Link 0 |

Some people here really could do with a seriously long break from social media. The insults and jibes flying are really quite tiresome. PoolSturgeon (Galway) - Posts: 2013 - 22/04/2022 08:31:27 2412186 Link 0 |
You are right PS, as usual. For the moment I will retire from this thread. I wish Galway all the best in the future and as I have often said before, when Limerick are not in it, I am always glad to see anyone, but Cork Tipp or KK winning it.

Where did you hear that Katser? Or were you there? Not reported in any of the media and I wasn't there I was in Wexford Park.

It's very sad news Oldtourman. She was Moran's daughter who played for Athenry. I agree with you, if it were all about winning we'd have very few teams playing the game. I'm out of here. This form of communication doesn't suit everyone. I'm sure if the real Oldtourman and Baire met at a game we'd get on fine! Best of luck in Munster this year!

Not a bit, maybe if we did jealousy/envy/hurt more in Galway, we might not be still stuck on a miserable 5 All Irelands in 138 years. As Joe Connolly famously said after 2017 and I quote "We haven't been ambitious enough, we haven't been hungry enough in Galway. We're a rich county, there's plenty of employment in Galway, there's two third-level institutions. We have superb structures in clubs. We have a quarter of a million of a population. We shouldn't be picking up All-Ireland's every 30 years, and the reason we haven't is that it's our own fault". So no I don't have an inferiority complex, I just happen to admire what Limerick have done since 2018, and yes I am jealous of their success, as I would have seen Limerick as a somewhat similar county to us. In your eyes my admiration/envy of Limerick makes me weak, however your attitude is systematic of everything that is wrong with Galway hurling, and which is why you and your ilk see the odd All Ireland success every 30 years or so as a success. gilly1910 (Galway) - Posts: 181 - 22/04/2022 11:18:21 2412231 Link 0 |
Just to clarify her dad was Cathal Moran and he played on 3 AI Club winning teams in 1997, 2000 and 2001. The Graigue-Ballycallan one to which you refer was in 2001 - they beat Wolfe Tones from Shannon in 1997 and Doora-Barefield in 2000. Very sad news for all her family, friends and team-mates.

Not sure why you'd presume to put words in my mouth. Jealousy and envy are weak emotions, this is beyond dispute. Hurt is not. Hurt can inspire. But you have to have the quality in the first place. For example, Laois might be jealous or envious of Kilkenny's track record, that's unlikely to stop them being beaten out the gate tomorrow. Though I am sure they will give it everything. You can be as ambitious, envious, jealous or even as hurt as you like, it's not worth a mug of spit if you haven't got the quality you need to get the job done. Our (or any) county's wealth, employment situation and population aren't particularly relevant in themselves. Dublin have a lot of people, nobody is rushing to back them to win the LSHC. You can admire what Limerick have done (I do) without being jealous of it. I'm happy for them, they waited a long time for success and good luck to them. Admiration and envy are entirely separate things though. They have the quality and they execute terrifically well. Finally, though it's bold of you to say so, I can confirm that 'my attitude' has absolutely nothing to do what what is or is not 'wrong with Galway hurling'. I wouldn't claim to have that level of influence, whether benign or malignant. If I got a burst of jealousy or envy, it wouldn't make Galway any better. We are currently unlikely to be in a position to win an All Ireland this year because we are a bit short of the overall quality needed in a few positions. I can accept this, while being supportive, happy when we win, disappointed when we don't, though if it's all left on the field that's as much as we can ask for. Ask a Waterford supporter if they would consider an All Ireland every 30 years as a 'success'. It's all relative. Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 906 - 22/04/2022 13:07:01 2412255 Link 0 |
