Best I can do. Some might be wrong, off the top of my head stuff. Some clubs' grounds might be in one but most players come from another area etc."
Definitely have Cuala wrong anyway. Surely DLRD.

It would be naive of anyone to think Avonmore in Kilkenny or Kerry group in Kerry werent giving those great teams the resources they needed to succeed.
as highlighted on the Sunday Gave per registered player Dublin is getting 4 to 6 times more funding that other counties.
Pat Gilroy's argument was it needed more funding between the canals to develop the game, and many hundreds of thousands in dublin weren't playing the game, this may be the case but many of the same people hes talking about unfortunately need human basic needs first sport second, he knows this too.
If the GAA were to take that approach based on population we should be channeling millions into London and New York as millions of people there arent playing the game either, and both teams doing poorly.

Look if youd like to reply please keep it to the topic, please dont make it personal, turf muncher nonsense etc.
And before I get nailed no offence intended to the disadvantaged areas of Dublin needing basic needs first, sadly this is a fact in our society today, not just Dublin but countrywide."
What? People who live in between the canals have basic need human basic need - inner City property prices are some of the most expensive in Ireland, try and buy a one bedroom apartment on the docks.

There are loads of thriving growing cosmopolitan communities with an influx of domestic and international migrants that have seen huge areas of the city developed and regenerated with some of the best facilities and amenities in Ireland.

Seriously i dont know where people get their ideas about Dublin or if they ever visit but its not the 1980s anymore.

I thought daytona11 was discussing the merits!

Limerick have a population of 194,899

Kilkenny's population is half that.

A bit of can-do attitude might be to split Limerick in 2! Surely based on the proposal provided on this tread this is in play?

It's not really though. It seems there's only outcry when Dublin hammer the likes of Meath. However, nobody batted an eyelid when Meath put 7 goals past Wicklow a few weeks before, or when Mayo beat Leitrim.
The county structure is unequal in its nature, as someone mentioned above. Galway's population advantage over Leitrim is proportionally greater than Dublin's over Galway.
It's definitely a problem if no one can compete with Dublin, but splitting Dublin would be only a small part of a true solution in this regard."]You're spot on and this is the point that Gilroy was trying to make. He drew a drastic comparison with the US NFL to labour his point but in-effect what he was saying is that splitting Dublin may benefit a handful of counties who are just one peg below but it will do nothing for the vast majority who are trailing further back. The solution needs to be more elaborate and would need to consist of splits and amalgamations to make it fair. I just don't see counties being too willing to amalgamate, due to parochial issues, or Galway and Cork being willing to split along local government lines. I think the rush by some to disarm Dublin has blinded them to the wider problem. They wish to lower the bar rather than raise it.

They all have 2 administrative divisions as well AFAIK.

Co. Derry/Strabane; Omagh&Fermanagh as well as a number of other administrative divisions in the North as well."
I was joking at the point that few people seem to actually realise that Fingal/ DLRD/ South Dublin are actual counties since the 1990's after county Dublin was abolished in law and these counties were established. (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Government_(Dublin)_Act_1993). County Dublin was split at this time as it's population was deemed too have grown to big for local government purposes.
The post I was answering seemed to think having the likes of a Fingal county team was a contradiction to an inter county championship. I'm not saying this automatically proves Dublin should be split up, just pointing out the irony of the previous post.
As to what you said about the north of Ireland, not that I would argue anyway that the traditional counties of Ulster should be redrawn for GAA purposes, my understanding of the north of Ireland is the likes of Omagh & Fermanagh are not defined as counties, they are defined as Local Government Districts as they have a different system of local government up there since the 1970's.
As to your other point regarding cities, in the Republic of Ireland cities with city council's are not regarded as counties in their own right (that's why they are called city councils not county councils)

The solution for the Dublin question for me is simple. I would like to see Dublin's underage teams officially split into North and South Dublin (they already do this at under 14 level) and both teams ply in Leinster competitions al the way to under 20s. Dublin have two panels all the way up to minor level anyway, this makes things official. If the seniors have go on to dominate the next decade like this then you have the next crop of players who have played for North/South Dublin the whole time and it is a smoother transition. This benefits Dublin underage and also levels the playing field in Leinster and All Ireland underage competitions. I can't see many negatives to it?

Replying To ONdeDITCH:  "More needs to be done to foster the GAA in DLR,A successful Dublin team is papering over the failures in Dublin geographical area to have gaa in lots of areas in Dublin.Perhaps a smaller area might be better to get more clubs established."
More needs to be done to foster the GAA in DLR

What would you suggest? Most clubs in the area are quite new (Ballinteer - 1982, Cuala - 1974, N. Olaf - 1981, Kilmacud Crokes - 1966, Fox-Cab - 2005) suggesting there's a significant amount of GAA growth in the area in the past generation. In terms of participation, KC has circa 4,800 members, Cuala has 1,600, Fox Cab has 500 which seems pretty good to me and has risen exponentially over the past couple of decades. The clubs are very much accessible to surrounding areas so there's not really much scope for new clubs. In terms of success, Cuala and KC have won All-Ireland's in the recent past while Fox-Cab has contested a couple of recent AI finals, which is a fair level of achievement at senior level.

Given that DLR has strong soccer and rugby playing numbers, I'd say the GAA in the area has done well to grow so much in recent times. In spite of this, I still feel that, given the modest enough pick from clubs, a DLR representative side would be weak enough in the whole scheme of intercounty football and hurling and making DLR into a "county" for such purposes would be counterproductive.

City Councils in Ireland perform the function of County Councils though. Same as the local government areas in the North. They're split along population lines.

None of them, as with the 4 Dublin Council areas, are traditional counties, and it is the traditional counties of Ireland that the GAA is based upon.

So logically it follows that if you want the GAA counties based on Admin areas in Dublin, you'll want them based on Admin areas everywhere.

I can see the merit to that long term in conjunction with amalgamations of course.

Splitting Dublin is often talked about but I don't know how realistic it is. I mean the strength of the Gaa has been identity and tribalism so splitting Dublin seems as ridiculous to be me as merging say Monaghan and Cavan.

Now I know nothing lasts forever and there are socio-economic factors and population trends that the Gaa has no control over which may well effect the future of the organisation and we'll just have to wait and see how that pans out.

But if we're serious about addressing the current problem then we have to have a comprehensive review of how we got here first. In the 90s 4 different teams won Leinster, in the 00s 5 different teams and now we have a 10 in a row turkey shoot. What happened? Why did it happen? How can we fix it or is it worth fixing?

Aside from Leinster, Dublin are now going for 6 All-Irelands in a row and have remained unbeaten in championship football since 2014. Now look maybe the blue wave will finally break and roll back but it doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon.

Perhaps more clubs rather than bigger clubs is the answer, some clubs may have a surplus of playing members.
I feel a team representing DLR would hold their own with a lot of Co teams.

Restructure the championships for a start.

Dublin should play away games at the away venue and neutral games at a neutral venue.

Central funding. Ensure all funding is equally split.

Central GDOs. The GAA should employ these directly and not the county boards and county boundaries shouldn't he taken into account when their services are being delegated.

Rotate Dublin around the provinces or else get rid of the provincial championships.

Do we know if the GAA at national level has a club development section that actively looks at areas and suggests what might be done to create a new club or is it just left to gaa people that just might be interested in forming a club...the latter I believe might be the case.

You say all funding is equally split should it not be split proportionally? Some counties have far bigger general populations, playing populations than others.
Development officers shouldnt at all be working across counties. They need to have designated areas but should be county based or across areas within counties.
You dont have development officers for Connacht rugby working in Munster schools or Leinster staff working in Ulster.

Dublin shouldnt be rotated around the provinces because that doesnt help anything or anyone.
Provincial championships cant be got rid of.
Tipps win this year, Even Cavan who have most Ulster titles by far win was great considering theyve just 2 in 50 years!
