Four Teams Representing Dublin Geographic Area!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think it's absolutely worth having the discussion about how / which teams will participate in future, however, instinctively it doesn't feel right to move the county structures. If we detach from the historic structures to even out for population by splitting, you would need to accept that some counties would need to be merged too.

County identities and rivalries have been built over decades and decades - it's a bit intangible to say what differs us that sense of belonging is definitely a huge part of the GAA. If we did these changes, I'd be very skeptical if there'd be much support for some generic regional teams the as it's no longer 'our' team as a lot of the craic and buzz would be gone. Imagine a world where you could no longer 'hate' Meath?

Particularly in Dublin, the Dub footballers are unique as the only entity that links Northsiders and Southsiders and (in theory) without class distinction, so it links a huge number of people that probably wouldn't associate otherwise. Sure, it might make 2 or 3 good extra teams but there'd probably be little enthusiasm, at least at the start, so it mightn't be a great commercial decision.

At the same time, something needs to change and suggesting players just practice frees more and work harder in gym isn't going to be a solution either...

This covid has really given people very little to think about. Would it not just be better to wait at the end of the tunnel in croke park and break a leg on each Dublin player before they go on the field at least it would be straight forward, because that's what the above suggestion is akin to.

If you want to bring about the end of the gaa that suggestion is a good way to go about it.

Get every 'county' to be in or around the same population wise."
exactly. Its a non runner to try split dublin into 4 when most people dont know boundaries of these areas or recognise//support anything where these divisions are already in place.

ONdeDITCH why is every name listed twice. could post be edited to each club name is listed just once. makes it easier to read. some of the dub posters will be better at saying where all clubs would be if split but you could start things off...

Another good idea. Level the whole thing up - if that means Meath joining Westmeath or Louth so be it.

Replying To ONdeDITCH:  "Dublin city.....population 554k, Co Town Dublin

Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown...pop. 218k Co Town Dun Laoghaire

Fingal......population...….. 296k Co Town Swords

South Dublin...…...population...278k Co Town Tallaght

The above is the official designation given to the four administrative regions in Dublin together with their Co Towns, each has their own coat of arms also.

Is it too much to ask that each of the four field a team to compete against counties of similar and indeed much less populations?

For those that know can you say what and how many GAA Clubs are in each region?"
Well my own area of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown has only a handful of clubs, including ladies clubs (Fox-Cab) and colleges (UCD). Only four of those clubs would play in division 1. I can only speculate but I'd imagine a DLR team would be very weak and would struggle against the most modest of sides. There is also no stadiums in the area and there would be little capacity to build one given the built up nature of the area and the cost of land etc.

In answer to your question of "is it too much to ask that each of the four field a team to compete against counties of similar and indeed much less populations" the answer is yes, absolutely in DLR's case. You just looked up numbers on the internet and drew a completely unreasonable conclusion from these.

Are we going to split Galway and Mayo? Surely they have an advantage over Leitrim. And this is just one of many similar examples in the Country where Population is not even..!"
Galway has both codes at top level, so the county is split in 2 already"
And at that is still 4 times larger than Leitrim!

As far as I remember, the previous experiment with the Fingal hurling team didn't work very well - why would it be any more successful now??

Some interesting comments. I think make all players play for one of the counties their parents are from. We in Kerry will take Brian Fenton and Cian Ó D Sullivan. Clare or Kilkenny can take Connolly if he comes back. Obviously just messing. I do not agree to splitting Dublin but maybe enter a Dublin B team in div 4 of the league to help other players play County football and yes the grandparent rule would be good. Also I would be for some counties amalgamating if they agreed together(not to be forced by gaa).

So 2 teams in Cork, Galway, Limerick etc as well?

They all have 2 administrative divisions as well AFAIK.

Co. Derry/Strabane; Omagh&Fermanagh as well as a number of other administrative divisions in the North as well.

I must have banged my head and missed the cultural divide between the north and southside, bar a bit of banter every so often, there isnt one. Jaysus its crossing the ha'penny bridge, not knocking down the Berlin wall.

The population argument is hugrly flawed.

Look at China and India. Huge populations but poor at soccer, nevermind GAA.

The Vision of the GAA is all about Participation. For me, this is what people need to challenge if they want change.

Do you want participation or a very competitive All-Ireland competition?

Or, can you have great participation and an even Inter-county Championship when all Counties such varied Populations?

Tip: Its a good idea to read down the posts before commenting.

And to the poster who accused me of just throwing down figures......a little more constructive comment and less shooting the messenger please. We are all GAA people and we all want good competitive games.Thanks.

More needs to be done to foster the GAA in DLR,A successful Dublin team is papering over the failures in Dublin geographical area to have gaa in lots of areas in Dublin.Perhaps a smaller area might be better to get more clubs established.

to put it into context Swords alone has a population greater than 100,000.
It would be naive of anyone to think Avonmore in Kilkenny or Kerry group in Kerry werent giving those great teams the resources they needed to succeed.
as highlighted on the Sunday Gave per registered player Dublin is getting 4 to 6 times more funding that other counties.
Pat Gilroy's argument was it needed more funding between the canals to develop the game, and many hundreds of thousands in dublin weren't playing the game, this may be the case but many of the same people hes talking about unfortunately need human basic needs first sport second, he knows this too.
If the GAA were to take that approach based on population we should be channeling millions into London and New York as millions of people there arent playing the game either, and both teams doing poorly.

Look if youd like to reply please keep it to the topic, please dont make it personal, turf muncher nonsense etc.
And before I get nailed no offence intended to the disadvantaged areas of Dublin needing basic needs first, sadly this is a fact in our society today, not just Dublin but countrywide.

It's a valid point.

Even within counties. Take Portaloise for instance. They clean up every year within the Laois championship. Should you split them in 2, stop their sponsorship, cap their membership, stop their funding?

Restructure the championships for a start.

Dublin should play away games at the away venue and neutral games at a neutral venue.

Central funding. Ensure all funding is equally split.

Central GDOs. The GAA should employ these directly and not the county boards and county boundaries shouldn't he taken into account when their services are being delegated.

Rotate Dublin around the provinces or else get rid of the provincial championships.
