I often wonder about the mentality of some of those red thumbs. Especially those against those posts that are well meaning and not controversial. Somehow or other I think it is a macho thing and I can put someone down if I feel like it. Probably an attempt to shock and wait for the results. Don't know really but not the bravest way to engage someone.

I've never seen an over reaction like this one before. It's a bad strain of the flu lads.
There's more people dying each day from the actual flu than from Coronavirus.
Yesterday in China (the country where its most prominent) there were only 8 confirmed new cases of the virus. 8! This is in a county of 1.4 billion people!!
The media have everyone living in fear but the reality is you have more chance of winning the lottery than you do from dying of Coronavirus. The media are a disgrace.
Out of all the people who have caught the virus worldwide less than 4% died. And most of those who did had underlying health problems or were very elderly. I'm not making light of their deaths but there is very little chance of you dying from this.
Media just pumping fear into everyone as per usual!

How am I a disgrace? The facts speak for themselves.
In China there was 80000 confirmed cases in a population of 1.4bn. That's less than 0.0005% of the population. The death toll was much much less than this. Yet everyone is going round panic buying food and other supplies.
I feel sorry for the people who are genuinely scared of this.

What about Italy, over 1000 deaths in 2 weeks?

Italys population has one of the highest average age in the world. The average age of the people who have died from the virus in Italy is 81 and to quote the Italian national health institute "many of the deceased had preexisting health conditions".
Again, I'm not making light of their deaths however these facts are rarely reported by the media and as a result there is a huge panic being stirred up across the country

100% correct

I really am struggling to understand the hysteria regarding this.

About 646,000 people die from the common flu each year world wide. Almost all of these people have underlying health problems. But we hear almost nothing about this.

Covid 19 does seem to be quite a bit more contagious but the facts as they stand point to the virus being quite mild.

Why thousands of reasonably young and fit people are panic buying is crazy.

Also we are closing open air football matches, schools and colleges yet we can all mingle together in pubs, cinemas, swimming pools, gyms, etc...totally bonkers

These viruses always seem to start in the far east. Swine flu, bird flu, now corona .....

You have to wonder what they're doing wrong.

I'm in healthcare and been involved in the implementing of the protocols and managing risk in this locally where i work and am face to face with patients and those close to them all day every day clinically, healthcare is remaining calm, committed, collected and responding instead of reacting at the front line. Panic helps no one.

The reaction of the general public has been alarming, either people not caring and not taking personal precautions seriously or else people just reacting and panicking. What happened yesterday, was the most insane thing i think i have ever seen in Ireland, the government announce restrictions on indoor gatherings and what happens, 1000's of people cram themselves into supermarkets, mauling food and cram themselves into ques for a few hours, then go home to their families. Madness and very irresponsible.

Take the advised personal precautions, simple things make a world of difference, but more importantly use common sense as well."
As always , it's people are the weak link. Stupid , frightened , or social media reliant morons who can't help themselves and in the process make everyone elses life more difficult. Queues 100's yards long at 9am to get into shops.
It just goes to show how easy it is for society to break down in a very short space of time.

Is that your argument? Great debate.
I wouldn't go near Facebook or any social media for that matter. These sites are the cause of the hysteria as well. Bunch of sheep regurgitating nonsense that is spreading the fear.
All my comments are simply the facts of the disease that you'll find on any medical website reporting in the virus. Feel free to research it yourself instead of believing everything you hear on Twitter/Facebook

You could get yourself and pass it onto an old person. They are a bigger risk obviously, but being all lax about it will only cause inconvenience.

Johnsons lax attitude which has the UK 4 weeks behind Italy in the cases. I2 to 14 weeks before it peaks in UK.

Fairplay royaldunne, all the best to you yours, I know this virus doesn't pose a big health threat to most of us but there are plenty of vulnerable people out there who are under threat and they need to be prioritised above all else.

Fingers crossed this bloody virus passes sooner rather than later but we all have to play our part and be responsible in order for that to happen.

What facts? 0.1% death rate compared to 2-3%, at least twice as contagious..bad flu indeed, i hope none of your elderly relatives get it

When you say UK, I'm thinking that here is one time when a line down the Irish Sea might be absolutely appropriate.

Yes I could...the same way as I could get the normal flu and pass it to an elderly relative as well.
It still doesn't warrant this mass apocalyptic behaviour from everyone. Cueing outside shops before opening so they can run in to get a six months supply of bog roll! Jesus wept!

Those same people were clearing the shops during the snow 2 years ago. I heard a man on the radio today saying it will be worse then the famine.
That type of outlandish talk is no good for anyone..

And how exactly did China keep those numbers down to manageble figures? People where/are confined to their homes, food was delivered, there was no going out at all, streets where cleaned all public transport, shops, cafes and restaurants shut down, they built two 2K bed hospitals, they drafted in 100,000 soldiers to ensure this was adhered to. So enough of the skewed incorrect stats and attitudes. I get it you not at risk so screw everyone else, keep reading the dodgy insane conspiracy theories and convince yourself you know best. If this is left to its own devices just see what the statistic models show. And by the way even if you get you are not immune if you get a second time no matter what your age you will know about it. Why do you think Italy are doing what they are doing? do you think the professional doctors and scientists are wrong? Do you actually know what it is like to die in agony from this? Pathetic
