Tomás Mulcahy made no attempt to hide his disappointment after his Glen Rovers side were well beaten by Inagh-Kilnamona in the first round of the Munster club SHC.
With Aidan McCarthy helping himself to 0-14, the first-time Clare champions were always in control as they ran out 1-21 to 1-14 winners at Páirc Uí Rinn.
"Look, we were very, very poor in the first half. Never got to grips [with it]," the Glen manager told RTÉ.
"But you've got to give credit to Inagh-Kilnamona. They came with a gameplan. They dropped a bit deep. They had a man in front of [Eoin] O'Leary. They saw the threat he was in the Cork championship. So it took us a while to adapt to that
"They were excellent. To a man, their workrate, their hunger, their hurling on top of that, was superb."
The former Sunday Game pundit added: "We had a couple of harsh words with our guys at half-time. We asked them to perform better than what they were. They weren't doing justice to themselves and what they've done for us all year.
"And we got a bit of a spurt out of them there maybe for 10, 15 minutes in the second half. We got back to four points and we were kind of looking good at that stage.
"But a few questionable frees, picked balls off the ground as well and stuff like that. And two points gone up on the board so they went six points back up again. We lost a bit of momentum."
