Former Limerick goalkeeper Barry Hennessy has been confirmed as new coach in the Laois senior hurling set-up for 2027.

Hennessy, who announced his inter-county retirement in 2022, replaces Tipperary’s Aidan Stakelum in Tommy Fitzgerald’s backroom team after Stakelum joined Liam Cahill’s set-up in his native Tipp.

Hennessy worked as the head coach of Meath’s senior hurlers under Johnny Greville this past season, with Greville confirming his decision to step down in the Royal County last week.

Last year saw Hennessy steering Smith O’Brien’s to the intermediate championship title in Clare, having previously managed Lixnaw in Kerry for the 2023 and 2024, leading them to a SHC final appearance the in the former year.

Deputy to Nickie Quaid, Hennessy won All-Ireland SHC titles in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 with the Treaty County, along with four Munster crowns and two National Leagues.
