Death of Tipperary hurling great Seán McLoughlin

September 04, 2025

A Tipperary flag flies high.

Tributes have been paid to the four-time Tipperary All-Ireland SHC winner Seán McLoughlin, who passed away on Monday.

A highly-rated forward, the Thurles Sarsfields clubman was part of the Tipp panel from 1958 to ’69, during which he won back-to-back All-Irelands in 1961 and ’62, and again in 1964 and ’65. He also garnered nine county SHC medals and two All-Ireland MHC medals in 1952 and ’53, scoring a record seven goals in the two U18 finals.

“It was with great sadness that Tipperary GAA learned of the sad passing of former Tipperary senior hurler and All-Ireland medal winner Sean McLoughlin,” a county board statement read.

“Born in Rahealty, Sean first played competitive hurling for Rahealty where he enjoyed great success at minor level. He also enjoyed success with his school, Thurles CBS.

“He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of 16 when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor team, before joining the senior panel in 1958.

“The Thurles Sarsfields clubman made his senior inter-county debut in the 1960 Munster semi-final against Waterford and went on to win four senior All-Ireland medals with Tipperary, seven Munster championships, two National Hurling League medals, a Railway Cup medal with Munster, and nine Tipperary senior championship medals with Thurles Sarsfields.

“Tipperary GAA County Board extends its sincere sympathies to Sean’s daughters Lucy and Carmel, sons Liam, Brian and Jim, and the extended McLoughlin family at this sad time.”
