Waterford annihilated Westmeath with a 7-34 to 0-24 victory in Mullingar this afternoon to leave themselves on the cusp of promotion back to Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League.
The Deise men were in ruthless form from the start as goals from Kevin Mahony and Patrick Curran had them 2-6 to 0-6 to the good after a dozen minutes a TEG Cusack Park.
After that came points from Curran, Dessie Hutchinson and Charlie Treen before the latter smashed in their third goal 10 minutes before half-time.
Treen netted this second to leave the scoreboard reading 4-21 to 0-11 at the break and the second-half would see Hutchinson raising the visitors’ fifth green flag ahead of Sean Walsh grabbing two more goals in the closing stages.
The 31-point win also marked a return for Austin Gleeson to Waterford duty for the first time since May 2023, as he was introduced as a 60th minute substitute in the rout over the now relegated Lake men which sees Peter Queally’s side practically certain to be playing Division 1A hurling in 2026, with promotion secured all bar mathematically.
