Stephen Bennett is grateful to Waterford hurling boss Peter Queally for talking him out of retirement during the off-season.

Plagued by injury last season, the 29-year-old former All-Star was on the verge of calling it a day before speaking to Queally. And he looked to be back to his best when scoring 0-11 in the Deise’s comeback win over Dublin last Sunday which keeps them on course for promotion from Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League.

"There were thoughts. I think I retired about four times over the winter,” Bennett explained to WLR FM.

“In fairness to Peter, I just remember him saying one thing to me down at the Park Hotel. They're really good - the management, Dan (Shanahan), Eoin (Kelly), all them. Dan and Eoin - they just want you to play hurling. They just tell you, have that little bit of magic. Do what you want. It's just lovely to play for. 

“I wish I could play for another 10 years with them. We'll really give it a go now this year and see. But it's really enjoyable. I'll tell you what Peter said to me when I retire - but I'm just really enjoying playing for them now."
