John Kiely has to keep an eye out for everybody in his Limerick hurling camp, making sure they get whatever support they need. The Limerick manager recalls when on one occasion he was the one looking for help after an extra time All-Ireland semi-final win over Cork.
It was 2018 when he needed the support of his management group as he had to step away from his role for a couple of days following the 3-32 to 2-31 win over the Rebels.
Kiely was speaking on the Brian Carthy Podcast where the discussion covered how the Limerick manager has to look after everybody under his charge and what that involves. Part of that is offering them a helping hand when they need it and also spotting when that is.
“At the end of the day, we all need a little help from time to time, and I am no different to the others,” explained Kiely.
“I am minded to the All-Ireland semi-final of 2018 and for three days after the All-Ireland semi-final I couldn't sleep. I had a rush of adrenaline after the game, and I just couldn't get it out of my system. I had to get acupuncture to get myself back down to a lower ebb again.
“But for the likes of Paul Kinnerk, Joe O'Connor and Caroline Currid, who picked up the reins from me for a couple of days, there would have been nobody fulfilling the role that I would normally fulfil in those days.
“I had to step away, to make sure that I got myself in a position to be able to contribute again to the group. So, you know, we all, at times need people to jump in and say, ‘What can I do for you?’
