Kildare legend Johnny Doyle has announced his retirement from club football at the age of 46.

It comes after Doyle’s native Allenwood bowed out of the Kildare senior football championship this evening after falling to a 5-10 to 1-13 loss at the hands of Athy.

One of his county’s greatest ever players, Doyle won Leinster SFC honours with the Lilywhites in 2000 and an All-Star award in 2010 before announcing his inter-county retirement in 2014.

Over the next decade the veteran attacker continued to serve Allenwood on the playing field, helping his club to county and Leinster intermediate titles last year to add to the senior championship title he won with them in 2004.

Speaking after today’s defeat at the Kildare GAA Centre of Excellence, Doyle confirmed his decision by stating: "That's it, you can't go on for ever."
