Replying To Sheridan2010louth:  "Positives so far - Diarmuid Moriarty is 21 years old but already looks ready to start and impact games, Eoin Harkin and Jayson scully have gone to a new level, Jordy Morris looked GREAT today, Cillian osullivan looked good in both games and scored 2 goals today. Matthew costello is trying an awful lot harder than he did last year. Daithi McGowan is a very skillful footballer. Donal lenihan is back and has looked sharp in both games. Keoghan still looks like prime Donal keoghan. Goalkeeping situation looks like a strength not a weakness

Areas for concern - Full back line looked a shambles in both games, Cathal Hickey just doesn't look right after being one of our better players the last few years, Morris looked great today but came off with a hamstring injury. League is 3 weeks away, we haven't much chance without him. Midfield looks like a weakness, Menton is gone and Ronan Jones can't get his body right to play. We still look 2 or 3 forwards light."
Some good news from COR in post match interview, McGill back with panel Ronan J and Harnan nearly ready and Shane Walsh also set to return

Strange game. We looked the better team throughout but yet couldn't pull away. Some of the shooting in the first half was criminal rather than looking for and passing to someone in better position we took snap shots and Hail Marys. We were too easily dispossessed too often. I heard Colm afterwards talk about nerves , well as a manager that is something he has to work on. Who is our forward coach ? They need to get on top of this asap it's all very well kicking the ball more but if there is no plan who to kick to and no strategy then it's just coughing up ball. Midfield won't cut it against top teams we need jones back soon. I thought young Curtis did well and has like moriarty put his hand up. Can I ask why McGowan took the free near end when lenihane was on ? Seemed strange. Also Harry should have been called up for the 45 in second half instead of kicking it short , Laois could nail them in first half. Look this is what this competition is all about seeing where things can be improved on. We have 3 weeks till we go to cork in a must win game. So now is the time to iron out these problems. On the plus side keoghan mcentee McGowan (barring a couple of errors) O'Sullivan all looked sharp Morris is by far our stand out forward and I do hope it was just a niggle he came off with. We really are in trouble if he is injured.
Here's looking forward to a win on Wednesday and another game. We need all the games we can get before league

So the team for Longford will be a split of lads from teams that played carlow/laois. Who should start against Longford?

"Can I ask why McGowan took the free near end when lenihane was on ?"

It was a free for a left footer, COR shouted over for daithi McGowan to take it. Expected McGowan to kick it, Lenihan also missed a bad free in a central position, seems like free taking is going to be a problem area again this year.

Thought it was interesting that Harry Hogan didn't take any frees yesterday, maybe O'rourke doesn't believe in goalkeepers taking scoreable frees.

Daithi McGowan will almost certainly start midfield, Jason scully will be starting half forward. Moriarty and Costello id say are the other 2 full forwards. I wouldn't be so sure about Hickey and Harnan at all, Eoin Harkin is a mile ahead of both.

I'm fine with goalkeepers coming up to kick something that requires a bit more distance, but you shouldn't be relying on a keeper to be coming up kicking scorable free from inside the 45. We should have 2/3 forwards who can kick those so glad to hear Harry Hogan wasn't coming up for them.

Would agree. Hickey is a quality player but his form is oddly miles off. Hopefully he can find it when playing Sigerson. Locks on the team for me for the early league are 1). Hogan, 3). McGill, Harkin and Keoghan 5 and 6. Shane McEntee either 7 or 8 until Jones or Flynn are fit. 9. McGowan. 10). O'Sullivan, 12). Scully, 13). Costello, 14). Morris (came off injured which is a huge concern). Both corner back spots, a half back/midfield spot, number 11 and then either Lenihan/Moriarty at 15. Lenihan has been a sub in both games so maybe he wants him coming in to close games which would be an impact off the bench. As Jones, Flynn and Walsh come back in I think the team has a decent look to it with the exception of the corner back spots. Lavin has been a huge loss and hasn't been replaced

Agree with all of this. Playing high level college football seems to have brought on Moriarty a massive amount. He just keeps getting bette and better. Harkin and Scully have upped their levels no doubt. My only worry would be are they just getting a heart start because they were match fit from the regional. Hopefully not and they keep up the level. Costello getting a defined role closer to the goal is working a treat for him. That's the best I've seen Morris since the Monaghan game 2 years. Hickey is a really confusing case. Looked dynamite 2 years ago as a 21 year old and unfortunately is playing worse now than he was then. Team yesterday really lacked physicality for a lot of it. Keoghan, McGill, Harkin, Jones and Flynn will help that. Is Thomas O'Reilly still on the squad does anybody know?

Ahh I see. Yes I know lenihane had missed one. Everyone around me was expecting Harry to pop up and take the 45 and indeed that one. Harry hit 14 last year. Don't care whether Colm agree with it or not. We are not blessed with free takers. He should be used

Every other good team around us has good free takers and forwards you know it's almost a gimme if you foul them inside the 45. I can't accept we haven't got a single consistent free taker in the county.

I know. It's been a problem for a long time. Newman been the last one we could say 7/10. Which I think is minimum for county standard. Morris is good but is very one sided. The return of lenihane hasn't yet given the results (although it would be very unfair to judge on two half games ) we know hogan is probably our best but if Colm has his face against it then I don't know what we can do.

Unfortunately this is almost the same team that put in a pathetic performance against Dublin last year but it is hard to argue it may be close to our strongest team. Will be even more interesting to see how a different approach from a different management team and whether there will be a different outcome. This year is likely to be a year in transition with progess difficult. I think concentration on development of younger players in the county, particularly the successful minor teams of 2019/2020 with a view of pushing many of thses lads on asap. We are at the moment an average Leinster team and an average div 2 team until we prove otherwise.

I presume this is your team for next game out??

In terms of championship, hopefully Jack Flynn will be back. I'd have him in there
