Excited by this team selection, hope the 7 debutants go well tomorrow. They are all right good footballers.

If we can't beat Carlow we may throw our hat at it. Hopefully we lay down a marker

Happy new year boss. Be interesting to see the style of play and how we handle kickouts and frees. Feel these two aspects alone have been costing us 6-7 points minimum per game over past few years.

True. But that midfield pairing does not inspire me that they can take the highball. Hopefully I'm wrong but Brian Conlon for me is no replacement for Brian menton. (Not having a go at the lad) but menton is a huge loss , Again I so want to be proved wrong. The free taker will be interesting no Morris , no Harry, no Lenehan no cos no McMahon. Who you think will be on frees ? Lynch ?

Lynch on the frees on the left hand side and Dathi McGowan on them on the right hand side i reckon.

Hi joe, who would be on frees for you. Am I correcting in thinking Lynch or one of the Moriarty brothers?

Brennan seemed an odd one to me alright.

Happy 23 to you and yours, here's to lots of healthy debate with you. Always enjoy your thoughts and views.

Looking forward to the new season and heading down to the game. Fresh faces on management and the team always brings a bit of excitement. Hopefully we can hit the ground running as the first few weeks of the league being Cork and Clare are huge games that are fairly 50/50

Good to start with a win. Wasn't too pretty in the first half. The experienced guys in Robin Clarke, Cillian O'Sullivan, Lenihan and Shane McEntee made a big difference. We kicked the ball a good bit more, in the first half we kicked from too far out and the full forward line couldn't win much ball. Moriarty the stand out 4 good scores from play. Costello played really well in a new role as the first receiver in front of a 2 man full forward line. Aaron Lynch struggled and kicked quite a few wides. Looked to be rushing things. Full back line struggled a bit too. Albeit O'Hare and Rafferty came into it a bit more in the second half. Brennan looked solid in goals. Great kickouts and shot stopping, possibly questionable on high balls. McGowan looked very comfortable but still think we are lacking at midfield with Flynn and Jones out injured and Menton having left. Be interesting to see the team for Saturday. Hopefully a few more new faces

Agreed Moriarty looks to be settling well and I wouldn't give up hope on Lynch just yet nerves must have played a big part. A win is a win though and great to be off the mark.
I am worried about the full back line but hopefully they can regroup and get to know one another a little better but if we are struggling against Carlows full forward line I would be worried with what would happen against 3 Kildare full forwards nevermind Dublin.

Ah good result lads but lets be honest its all about just getting minutes into the legs for these guys and adapting to highler level of play for most. Lynch had a few wides but at least he showing and getting on the ball so will only get better when he becomes comfortable at this level. Good to see a strong finish and the more experienced lads bringing an impact from the bench. Might see a stronger mix moving forward but look the results in these games arent too important, its all about game time and lads developing working relationships and understandings of the gameplans.

No doubt it's about identifying new players and seeing what players have kicked on. Of the inexperienced players Brennan, McGowan and Moriarty impressed. Full back line struggled a bit and Aaron Lynch had a poor game. Harkin and Scully look to have kicked on and be improving all the time. Hickey didn't play well but it was only a half and he is playing Sigerson so not reading a whole pile into it.

I agree i thought Meath's Full back line really did struggle throughout the whole game, all debutants so not overly suprising but I came away dissapointed. You'd hope Conor McGill could strenghten that line but its a big concern for me.

Early days but Diarmuid Moriarty looks like the real deal and with Shane Walsh not committing to the team what a boost it is to have him. Eoghan Frayne will join the Panel next year as he still has 1 more year of u20s, between Diarmuid Moriarty and Eoghan Frayne I think we could be looking at 2 of the best Meath Forwards in quite sometime.

Well unless their is an injury crisis the full back line and goalkeeper will be completely different from last night come league. The entire full back line and goalkeeper were making their debuts last night so it was a big test for them, which they will be better for. I would go with the following goalkeeper and back 6 for the league presuming all fit and available:

1. Harry Hogan
2. Eoin Harkin
3. Conor McGill
4. Robin Clarke
5. Donal Keogan
6. Padraig Harnan/Shane McEntee
7. Cathal Hickey

The two Ryans are also in contention here, and Sean Rafferty and James O'Hare are good back up. Eoin Harkin and Robin Clarke were very good last night in the half back line but are probably needed more in the full back line.

Let's not forget Carlow are div 4 and with all due respect are one of if not the poorest team in Leinster that play football at senior level. I was hoping for a comprehensive win. Unfortunately that didn't happen. Kick outs were ok as we were allowed to go short, midfield a huge problem, McGowan did his best but it's a worry going forward with menton gone and jones injured. Lynch had nerves abound and certainly wouldn't be worried about him going forward he will settle down d moriarty (first time I really saw him ) was impressive, Shane Mcentee is a credit to his fitness levels and his dedication to Meath that he was so good last evening, O'Sullivan did what he does best , lenihane wasn't on for that long at all. Frees still a major problem look what can happen when you have a dedicated free taker like Carlow with I think his name was foley. So cons kick outs still a problem when we can't go short , midfield a worry going forward, long ball in too predictable at times and easily countered. Pros moriarty looks a great find, Costello and scully are top notch, campion seems to have returned to his potential before injury (someone said he got injured) we are trying to combine playing ball through hands and kicking in which is good.
Look it's only obc and it's a ideal competition to experiment. I'm sure Colm and team will be aware that the most important thing this year is promotion nothing else matters. As if we end up in mid to low table we could in likelihood be playing tailteann cup. And that would be a humiliation for a county like ours. Looking forward to next game and some more new faces. We all know mcentee keoghan O'Sullivan etc will be playing come first league game so perhaps don't start them in next game.
One final thing why was our likely starting keeper brought on as a outfield player or am I loosing my mind ?
