The Championship

Well might as well have a thread on this.
Despite a indifferent league I'm quite hopeful of a good run in championship and dare I say it maybe just maybe a Leinster. (Ok maybe I'm been over optimistic) but Dublin are not what they are, we should have beat them last year. And I can't see Kildare hype doing anything. I'm also a little bit cynical of the draw for semi finals. I have a sneaky feeling we will get drawn on opposite side of Dublin and Kildare, setting up what hq might determine as the biggest Leinster final crowd in a long time, with the expected pairings of Dublin v Meath in the ladies and mens finals. Now might be totally wrong, but it's just what I think.
I do feel that our forwards at the minute are either performing below what they should or are just not up to it. And that is the area we need to concentrate on, the gk situation is satisfactory which it hasn't been in awhile. And I don't care that hogan takes the frees either. Once he gets them. Jones and menton are a good pairing in middle. The fb line is more secure with McGill in there and I'm sure it will be solid when campaign starts. Same with hb line. It's when we get in the 6 forwards that we start to have problems, cos for all his brilliance can be downright frustrating, Jordan Morris is our main forward , he needs to score more from play, and up his performance to last years level, Costello? Same as Morris has disappointed this year. Shane walsh, I don't know what to say, honestly this was my big hope for our new marquee forward, people can talk about our style of play not suiting him and maybe it doesn't but to be a top ic forward you have to adapt, now hopefully he will reignite that spark, the talent is there so hopefully the hard ground will bring out the best in him, Thomas oreilly has actually been better this year than last but still needs to do more but he has improved, Jason scully was sublime against some teams this year , and was probably our best overall forward, banty should be given more time to make a impact on a game he had a mare against Galway, so did 12 others, he deserves a chance to redeem himself, joey wallace is a good impact sub and could push for a start. Jack O'Connor has certainly put his hand up for a start , Bryan McMahon I think is best utilised as a impact sub. All those players will hopefully improve with the better conditions and our style of play (rightly or wrongly) should really suit them in weather that is calmer. Ie no bloody storm force winds. Now people will say we should have different styles of play and I actually agree we should, other counties can adapt to conditions, we unfortunately as this year proved could not, let's be honest we should have beat Offaly Down and probably Roscommon but we (and I blame sideline for this) made a balls of it.
That all been said. I'm gonna stick my neck on the line and say the Delaney cup will have green and gold on it.
Hon the royal.

Good man RD! Always optimistic!!
It would be a great day out in Croker if we had a mens and womens final between Meath and the Dubs!
Starting out this would seem to be the most open Leinster For a long time! Dublin Kildare probably a bit deflated from the league while Louth are probably a bit upbeat.
I think we will see a Meath Dublin final at the end of it and who knows what will happen then!

I think the players you have mentioned in our forward unit are all going to play some part! I think they will be better with a fit Jones and Menton in midfield. We have been better since they came back and struggled when Jones went off last time out!

Let's the games begin!!!

At the beginning of the year I would have said its a Meath Dublin Final (assuming we miss each other in the semis, and we could give them a rattle. Now while Dublin have been below what I expected so far which is good, Kildare despite being relegated have been impressive and I wouldn't dismiss the so flippantly. As for ourselves, we have definitely improved since the beginning of the league and hopefully will continue to do so but we need a mark improvement in our scoring or we won't have a hope.
For me Banty doesn't start, he doesn't perform when he does and his best games are coming from the bench with 15-20 mins to go, hes a nightmare for any tired back and has the quality to chip in with 2-3 points in the dying embers of a game. McMahon the same to a lesser extent this year, I would have had him streets ahead of Banty before this league campaign but now its a case or role reversed. I think with all being fit we will see
10. Costello
11. O Reilly
12. Scully
13. Morris
14. Walsh
15. O Sullivan

Although I wouldn't be against J Wallace starting and O Sullivan from the bench as he also bring size and strength along with his pace. Walsh would be lucky to start based on his performances but in order to have some variation of player in the FF line and not all small lads I think he will. Jack O Connor played well against Derry, bt I don't see one good game claiming him a starting spot coe championship

Across the seven league games this year, those 6 forwards scored 2-21 from play, barely 3 scores a game, It's a hard pass from me. All been there and just aren't good enough. And the subs just aren't making an impact anymore unfortunately

I don't disagree its not good enough, personally as I've said Walsh will be lucky to start, O Sullivan I wouldn't be against using as an impact sub and starting J Wallace and O Reilly is playing better but has never been a free scoring forward. Scullys role isn't about scoring, he's very similar to Niall Scully for Dublin in that he does a lot of donkey work, tracking back etc but isn't in the team to score the whole time, that's the job of the other lads in there. And Costello has gradually gotten into it as the league has gone on and I think will come good as the season progresses. Again a bit lucky and now has O Connor breathing down his neck, but is a better player than O Connor and I would give the benefit of the doubt

Out of interest who would you start in the forwards ?
Tbh I really don't know who I would start myself.

I'm genuinely not sure RD. I mean I dunno who can get us those multiple scores we need. I've no doubt some one will do it in the quarter final, and maybe that might help them rediscover something.

For me i'd go with a forward line as follows

Costello-----Walsh------James Mc
O'Sullivan----Morris----O'Connor

Walah needs to be put at 11, involved in build up, giving the ball multiple times. What have DCU seem that Andy can't. Being a key man might help his confidence and having him on the ball a lot would help. James can get 2-4 scores, he's very accurate and also gets about the pitch. He's also able to drop into the half back line when hickey and Keoghan go forward. Costello needs a bit of a blow out and bully a team as he's shown he's well able to score heavily, and that might help him move on into a Leinster semi final

Cillian is the same as the two lads and is very accurate but he almost needs to no time to think about it. The more time he had the less likely be is too score. Jordan is wildly inaccurate, when he's on he's on and hopefully more hrs with Kingscourt and that's all sorted then he'll rediscover himself. Him and Walsh doesn't seem to work and this would allow Jordan to be the main guy. O'Connor is a wild card and did well Sunday and maybe a few more scores on challenge games would bring him along. Failing that maybe Banty gets another go but he'll get wrapped up against the better and more physical teams.

The Wallace's, McMahon, O'Reilly have shown they're not up to it to start and their impact is even less now off the bench.

Still think lenihan would offer something different to this bunch or maybe Aaron Lynch as a wild card.

I just think we surely lack decent forward

That's a fair assessment and starting 6. I'd find it hard to disagree if they started.

James mcentee if fit is one hell of a player. And fully deserving of his starting place. So is scully btw.
What will you say next year when James and Shane are on the team ?

Don't dislike this front 6 at all but do think Scully is hard done by if he doesn't start. I think J Wallace and Banty are both very good impact subs but neither seem to do well when starting so can't see them being in the first 15. I've also heard one or two lads being brought into the panel near the end of the league so there possibly could be some surprise inclusions as they have had a number of challenge games recently, Leitrim and Tyrone last week anyway.

Yeah TBF Scully is unlucky but i think James can do all he can but is a better scorer and that's what we lack is scorers. Scully might get you 1 a game, whereas james could get 3-4 and can take 45's if needed.

You'd have to assume Aaron Lynch is one for sure?

If we can't beat Leitrim then we should be giving up. I'd be interested in hearing how they did v Tyrone though.

RD you have your pulse more on the club scene. Is there anyone you'd think of worthy of inclusion?
