Replying To MillerX:  "I think it's called the age. Were well beaten by Na Fianna last year as well, writing has been on the wall and with a small panel, injuries and loss of form by any player will have a greater effect than where there is a strong panel."
also a fair clatter of those stronger lads were dual. This has to have taking a toll . these guys have been on the road and over achieving imo for a few years and that is testimony of the type of lads they were/are . I think its impossible to keep going back to the well as often as they did and not expect a difficult period to re group & rebuild

Replying To Foley91:  "Lads appear very concerned about killyon and longwood who are 2 senior teams. Would u not be more concerned about large towns like navan and kells only having weak intermediate teams or even no hurling in most of north meath. That to me is huge failing of the county board."
I would be concerned as they have offered more than north meath ever offered and as a county we need the likes of Longwood and Killyon to stay competitive and competing at senior level, i am not for one second been condescending to either club as i believe when these clubs are competing at the top end it is only good for meath hurling but at the minute they are in a declining state, yes they are both senior at present but is it sustainable long term.
These 2 clubs are probably in a position now that other rural clubs will find themselves in a few years time, however this is a concern in rural Ireland in general the way the planning laws are heading.

When you consider the big towns in meath and urban areas , that only trim ratoath and to lesser extent dunboyne actually take hurling serious.
Kells are in free fall
Navan had huge underage success years ago , and are lucky some of those are still playing to keep them going
Oldcastle , slane etc and rest of north meath is a joke
Athboy are trying to compete after years of neglect to be fair
Dunshaughlin next to nothing
Ashbourne next to nothing
Bettystown / stamullen etc , now putting in some effort , how long this lasts nobody knows

When you consider its only really small rural parish that are the main proper clubs and the small percentage of meath that covers its a shame.

When you talk to guys playing hurling in north meath and they tell you about the Bad intermediate and junior football teams blocking lads playing hurling as if it will change their yearly failure to win anything come championship , its a credit to the few guys that do try keep it going.

Ashbourne seem to be reaching a few underage finals recently and have plenty of representation on county underage teams in hurling. They had a big win over Kells at the weekend. Hopefully they can push on with the hurling.
The likes of Ashbourne, Stamullen, Bettystown etc could have anybody move into the area due to the attractiveness of each location and their proximity to Dublin etc for work. There is a real chance to get lads hurling in each of these areas and the county board need to push this as much as they can.
On the north meath hurling scene its an absolute shambles , a famous retort of these poor junior and intermediate clubs when beating a dual club is that "you're only a hurling club, must be hard to keep the football going". In fairness to the tones they have a great selection of clubs sprinkled throughout their starting 15 and subs.
The Urban areas need serious investment, if we are to drive on hurling in the county. Try utilise every young lad we can to create strong underage teams that will eventually lead to adult hurlers in each region.

Dunshaughlin is affiliated with Drumree. Football is played in Dunshaughlin, whilst the hurling is played in Drumree.

Think the comment is still relevant as haven't made any progress in a decade.

There seems to be some improvement coming in the likes of Don/Ash, Kells and Navan in hurling at underage levels. From just looking at the underage leagues/championships, all three are competing in division 1 at U15 level (Ratoath and Dunboyne are in division 2). Kells' amalgamation (with Kilskyre/Moylagh presumably) finished 2nd in the group stages of the minor hurling league division 1 while Don/Ash have made the final in division 2 (beating NOM in the semi). Kells were narrowly beaten by Trim in the U15 hurling league final (having won all their games in the group stage).

It'll take a while for these improvements to translate into adult level but they certainly will see improvements over the coming years if the promising young teams can be kept together. Let's not forget, our adult team was plying their trade in the junior hurling championship only 10 years ago.

The problem with those areas is the drop off rate after minor level , due to either pressure from football side or poor setup at adult level within the club , sometimes both

Starts well before minor I'm afraid to say, sad that grown men think like this .

That is true. But I suppose you have to sort out underage or else a good set up at adult level is wasted. I'd be optimistic for the clubs mentioned. Off the top of my head, I can't remember a North Meath team being in the top 2 at two separate age groups in the same year.
Drumree/Dunshaughlin though is rather disappointing though. They don't appear to have fielded a team at minor level and are in division 3 at U15. I was surprised to see Kiltale languishing near the bottom of division 3 in that age group too.

They might play hurling in Drumree and football in Dunshaughlin under their agreement, but I do not see any improvement in the Drumree numbers, given Dunshaughlin is expanding at a rate.

Most of the drumree players are from outside the town , they made a big push to get kids playing from the town years ago and it didnt work out at all, they have no minor team this year for example.
Some great people in that club trying their best to keep things going , and still fielding two teams at adult level

The county board should be sending coach into dunshaughlin schools and navan , but i dont think they are bothered.
I assume pats in navan have no hurling team still ? did they ever?

Your incorrect there. The Pats won the North leinster and Leinster B hurling 3 years ago, but the lads never got a medal for their achievements. A total disgrace in my view
