Profound sadness at passing of Raharney and Westmeath camogie stalwart

October 16, 2024

Liz Cahill RIP.

Many tributes have been paid to a camogie stalwart and young mother-of-two from the midlands who has passed away after a long battle with illness.

Liz Cahill (nee Shaw), who was in her mid-forties and lived in Shinrone, Co. Offaly, won seven Westmeath senior camogie championships with her beloved Raharney and also represented her county on the field and at Leinster Council level. She is also a former chairperson of Westmeath Camogie. A highly-respected member of the teaching staff at St Joseph's, Rochfortbridge where she taught Home Economics, Liz was part of a well-known GAA family. Her brother Brendan is Westmeath GAA secretary, while another brother John hurled for Raharney and Westmeath for years, captaining the Lake County to win the inaugural Christy Ring Cup in 2005. John also managed Raharney this year.

Hundreds of club-mates, teaching colleagues, family and friends took part in a walk around Raharney's pitch in Joristown last night in memory of Liz.

"Our club is heartbroken with the loss of our dear friend, teammate, mentor, coach, leader, former captain and player Liz Cahill (Shaw)," Raharney Camogie club posted on Facebook.

"We are so lost and are struggling to express our sadness at this time.

"We are aware that Liz touched so many lives and she had a huge impact on so many people both young and old near and far. Liz left a mark on everyone’s lives that she came in contact with over the years.

"There are many different words to describe our Lizzy. She was a funny, kind, passionate, lovable, caring, genuine, honest and gentle person but was also known for her epic finger wag and her strong mind which we came to value and respect.

"Anyone that had the pleasure of knowing Shaw understands the type of person she was and would have cherished her as much as we always will."

Liz is survived by her husband Denis and young sons Cormac and Donnacha.
