Mayo took away a hard-earned point from the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds this evening thanks to a 1-17 to 1-17 draw with All-Ireland champions Armagh.
Kevin McStay’s side looked to be in a world of trouble at half-time as they trailed the hosts by 1-10 to 0-5, with this goal from Paddy Burns on the quarter hour mark propelling the Orchard men towards their commanding position at the interval.
Early second-half points from Paul Towey and Matthew Ruane were the start of the comeback for the Westerners and the scoreboard would read 1-14 to 0-11 when Davitt Neary flicked possession into his path and sent a cool finish past Ethan Rafferty (watch the goal below) to make it a three-point game with 20 minutes remaining.
Mayo would be level a dozen minutes later, with Neary’s point making it 1-15 apiece, and the scores of Aidan O’Shea and Ryan O’Donoghue would have them two up before substitute Stefan Campbell and Conor Turbitt (free) grabbed late points that secured a draw for Kieran McGeeney’s men.
