Two Westmeath schools are expected to be sanctioned after violent scenes marred the end of their Br Bosco Cup (Leinster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship) quarter-final on Thursday.
Moate Community School defeated local rivals Marist College, Athlone by 0-10 to 0-7 in Páirc Chiaráin, Athlone to qualify for a semi-final against Ardscoil na Tríonóide, Athy early in the New Year, but their victory was overshadowed by a melee which erupted straight after the final whistle.
According to local reports, the row was sparked by a player celebrating in front of the opposition dugout. A number of substitutes and players duly reacted, leading to ugly exchanges. Order was eventually restored following the intervention of coaches and staff members from both camps, with no serious injuries being reported.
