Matches were cancelled last weekend at a Cork GAA club amid fears that rubble from a demolished building nearby could contain asbestos.

Grenagh GAA, which is the club of former Cork dual star Tom Kenny, made the decision after the demolition of an old piggery building had raised concerns. Planning and environment enforcement teams from Cork County Council were due to inspect the rubble yesterday.

Cork North Central TD Padraig O Sullivan told Cork 103 Radio: "I suppose that's what's being alleged locally and look, if that is the case then I suppose people are genuine in their concerns.

“I suppose they were so concerned that they actually closed the GAA club that weekend, so there was no GAA club or GAA matches played above in Grenagh that weekend and I suppose people were discouraged from using the playground as well - it's only probably 100 metres from the site so there was genuine frustration and concern up there all weekend."
