Meath ace injured as hooter controversy rages

Meath's Sean Rafferty

Meath full back Sean Rafferty suffered a worrying looking injury in the closing stages of Na Fianna’s controversial county SFC draw with Simonstown at Páirc Tailteann on Saturday evening.

Rafferty, who enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough season that saw him named on The Sunday Game Team of the Year and is expected to earn him an All-Star, is a major doubt for Na Fianna’s final group match against Wolfe Tones in two weeks’ time after being forced off with a leg injury in the closing stages.

The Enfield club snatched a 0-12 apiece draw when former county attacker Jamie Queeney fisted over a last-gasp equalising point after Simonstown goalkeeper Ben Hoey landed a huge two-point free in the 12th minute of injury-time.

The hooter sounded before Na Fianna had taken a sideline kick, but this is allowed under the new rules and Simonstown's protestations to referee Kieran Olwell were all in vain.
