Wintry weather to contend with

Online weather expert Cathal Nolan is looking for clubs to take part in a trial aimed at helping teams take advantage of weather conditions.

The award-winning climate scientist and meteorologist is hoping to devise a system which would allow teams to best utilise the elements, and is seeking five teams from five counties to participate in a trial service for the 2025 club season.

In a post on Ireland’s Weather Channel Facebook page, the Rhode, Co. Offaly native wrote: “A game of two halves? Who has the wind? The sun was in his eyes! We were going grand till the rain came! Sure they had a Gale!

“All phrases we’ve heard uttered at GAA matches before, but never before has the weather played such an important role in deciding Gaelic Football matches. With the introduction of the new rules, this club season will be determined as much by those that adapt to the conditions best, especially towards the end of the club season when our Irish weather will turn ever more against us.

“The advent of the new rules, combined with my own experience as a player and coach, spurred me to study the impact of meteorological conditions on Gaelic Football matches so far this season, from which results I have determined a system to best utilise the elements of the weather.

“As such I am seeking a minimum of five clubs from five different counties across Ireland to work with their team ahead of and during the 2025 club championship to aid them in delivering silverware.

“This is the first time such a service has been made available, and for any club seeking to get over the line, this may just add those crucial scores to win the day.”
