Ronan O’Toole is the latest high-profile name to opt out of the Westmeath football squad for the coming season.
The St Loman’s playmaker is taking a year to go travelling in what is another devastating blow to new manager Dermot McCabe. His departure comes after the retirements of John Heslin, Kevin Maguire and James Dolan, while Andy McCormack has moved to the Middle East.
O’Toole was an All-Star nominee in 2023 and was also the inaugural Tailteann Cup Player of the Year in 2022. His St Loman’s team-mate Sam McCartan is expected to wear the number 11 jersey for the Lake County in their Allianz League Division 2 opener at home to Louth on Sunday.
