A former GAA player from Meath scored the winning penalty as Grimsby Town caused a huge Cup upset against Manchester United last night.

Stamullen man Darragh Burns sent supporters of the League Two outfit into dreamland when he buried his second penalty in a marathon penalty shootout at Blundell Park to hand the Mariners a 12-11 victory after a dramatic Carabao Cup second round tie had finished 2-2 after 90 minutes.

United's fate was sealed when new signing Bryan Mbeumo hit the crossbar from the final spot kick.

While soccer was always his preferred sport, Burns was a talented Gaelic footballer who scored 2-8 for St Patrick's National School in a Cumann na mBunscol final at Páirc Tailteann before going on to win underage championships with his local GAA club, St Pat's. The Ireland U21 cap was invited to play for the Meath U15s, but had already decided that soccer was the game for him.

By coincidence, the Dublin-born Burns went on to play for another St Pat's - St Patrick's Athletic - and Shamrock Rovers before signing for his current club.
