A 20 per cent increase in sales of O’Neill’s shorts in 2020 has been put down to the ‘Paul Mescal effect’.

The ‘Normal People’ star and former Kildare minor football captain made the €20 O'Neill's shorts one of last year’s most sought after fashion items, having worn them in a GQ cover photo shoot during the Autumn.

Speaking to RTE.ie, O’Neill’s director Paul Towell described the 20 per cent sales increase in shorts sales as “one of the few bright spots in a very difficult year", with sales of the sports wear’s replica jerseys plummeting by 70 per cent in 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19.

Mr Towell outlined that the ‘Mescal effect’ "brought the O'Neill's brand to a wider audience allowing us to expand our range in ladies shorts in particular with new colour combinations."
