Father-and-son line out together in Galway SHC

September 12, 2024

Father and son Ivan and Andrew Canning lined out for Portumna against Liam Mellows.

A father-and-son from a famous hurling family togged out together in the Galway SHC last weekend.

Veteran goalkeeper and local County Councillor Ivan Canning – who is an older brother of Galway great Joe – had the rare honour of lining out alongside his son Andrew for Portumna in their 1-21 to 5-22 defeat to Liam Mellows in Gort.

It wasn’t the first time it has happened in the fiercely-competitive Galway SHC. Back in 1995, legendary corner back Sylvie Linnane and his son Shane played for Gort against Kiltomer in a county quarter-final.

Meanwhile, the draws for the Galway SHC and IHC preliminary quarter-finals have taken place and are as follows:

SHC Preliminary Quarter- Finals

Cappataggle v Killimordaly

Clarinbridge v Ardrahan

St Thomas v Craughwell

Castlegar v Kilconieron

IHC Preliminary Quarter-Finals

Killimor v Craughwell

Ballygar v Turloughmore

Sylane v Abbeyknockmoy

Clarinbridge v Rahoon-Newcastle
