Cavan secured a win in their first outing in Division 3 of the Allianz Hurling League by seeing off Sligo 1-17 to 1-12 at Kingspan Breffni.

After their season opener against Mayo was called off last weekend, the Ollie Bellew’s team made a strong start against their Connacht opponent to go build up a 0-8 to 0-4 lead after 24 minutes.

Sligo got level through an Andrew Kilcullen goal on the half-hour mark, but the points of Liam O’Brien saw the Blues take in a two-point lead at the break and Canice Maher’s goal six minutes into the restart helped them go on and record an opening five-point victory.

The day’s other Division 3 clash in the Allianz HL saw London edging Wicklow by 1-18 to 1-17 at Echelon Park.

The sides had traded early goals in Aughrim, with David Devine landing the visitors’ major after nine minutes, and they would be level four times in the closing quarter before Dylan Dawson’s late point cemented a second win on the bounce for the Exiles.

In Emyvale, Louth cruised to their second win in Division 4 of the Allianz HL by handing hosts Monaghan an emphatic 2-23 to 0-11 defeat, with Peter Fortune among the Wee County’s goal scorers on the day.
