An old face is returning to the Offaly football management scene after a long absence.

Gerry Fahy is set to be appointed as head coach of the Offaly U20s, 20 years after he was controversially ousted as senior manager after just one season in charge in 2004. His departure was followed by an infamous players' strike. Fahy has since managed the minor and U21 teams in his native Galway as well as the senior ladies. He led the U21s to an All-Ireland final appearance in 2017 and also managed NUI Galway to a Sigerson Cup in 2013.

Fahy will work alongside incoming Offaly U20 manager Mark Plunkett, who was one of his selectors in 2004 and is replacing fellow Tullamore clubman Ken Furlong in the role. Former St Brigid’s, Kiltoom manager Benny O’Brien and long-serving Rhode star Brian Darby will complete the management which is set to be ratified at the next county board meeting.
