Taoiseach Simon Harris says that the €50m pledged by the Irish government to the redevelopment of Casement Park will remain in place.

It comes after the UK government confirmed on Friday evening that it would not be providing funding for the project in time for Euro 2028.

In a statement released on Sunday afternoon, Mr Harris said that he will meet with GAA officials this week and also stressed that “we must not lose sight of the opportunity to have another top-class sporting facility in a city that thrives on sport”.

“I will meet with the GAA in the coming week, and I have already confirmed to Prime Minister Starmer that the €50 million the Irish government pledged to the project will remain in place, regardless of the decision around Euro 2028,” he said.

GAA president Jarlath Burns said that while association are very disappointed by the UK’s decision, it hasn’t halted its commitment to carry out the project and get the Belfast stadium rebuilt.

"It is just one of many disappointments along this journey to try and get Casement Park rebuilt as a centre of GAA in Belfast," the Armagh native stated.
